Breeders' Cup Friday 2013 Selections

We are now less than nineteen hours away from the first Breeders' Cup race of 2013, so without further ado, here are my selections for Friday's races!

Marathon
: I really want to like Ever Rider in this race, but his front-running style might not be best for a race of this distance, and he was not nearly as accomplished in his native country as 2012 Marathon winner Calidoscopio was, and he'll be only a fraction of Calidoscopio's odds. Worldly is well-bred for this distance, comes off of a nice third-place finish in the Homecoming Classic at Churchill Downs and should be able to grind on longer than most of his rivals. Pool Play intrigues me as the only horse in the race to have won at this distance, and maybe his recently-developed habit of losing contact with the field early on will prove beneficial in this very lengthy race.
SELECTIONS: Worldly, Pool Play, Ever Rider, Indian Jones

Juvenile Turf: I feel like Bobby's Kitten is by far the best of the American hopefuls, and I believe he has an excellent chance at upstaging the European invaders. The acceleration he displayed in winning the Pilgrim Stakes (gr. II) was breathtaking, and if he can replicate that on Friday, I don't think he can lose. Of the Europeans, I like Giovanni Boldini best. Being proven around left-handed turns is a major plus for me, and he third-place finish to the highly-regarded Toormore in the Vincent O'Brien National Stakes (Ire-I) was respectable enough. For the same reason, I like Outstrip, who ran Toormore to a neck in the Vintage Stakes at Goodwood, proving in that race that he can negotiate a tight turn, albeit a right-handed one. Fans of Bourbon Stakes (gr. III) winner Poker Player might want to take a look at All Cash, the maiden that finished a close fourth in the Bourbon Stakes. Granted, he didn't quicken as well as I would have liked in the stretch, but he didn't get the best of trips, and is definitely bred for the turf.
SELECTIONS: Bobby's Kitten, Giovanni Boldini, Outstrip, All Cash

Dirt Mile: The fact that Verrazano, Pants On Fire, and Goldencents drew the three outside post positions could make this race ripe for an upset, and with that in mind, I'm leaning toward Golden Ticket. Shortening up in distance off of a fourth-place finish in the Awesome Again Stakes (gr. I), and with a fast pace in front of him, I expect to see Golden Ticket save ground early and come running late under Joel Rosario. Hymn Book also intrigues me off of that promising third-place finish in the Kelso Handicap, and Taptowne could be a factor if he breaks cleanly and makes the lead from the rail. Brujo de Olleros held off Hymn Book in finishing second in the Kelso, and also possesses a bit more tactical speed, which could allow him to get the jump on the deeper closers turning for home. Goldencents is training sharply and has won around two turns in the past, but his outside draw could really compromise his chances.
SELECTIONS: Golden Ticket, Goldencents, Hymn Book, Brujo de Olleros

Juvenile Fillies Turf: The outside draw for Testa Rossi doesn't bother me nearly as much as the outside draw for possible favorite My Conquestadory, as I expect Testa Rossi to drop back early on and save ground before rallying in the homestretch. On sheer talent, she looks like the best of the Americans to me, and she proved in France that she can win with Lasix, which is a plus. However, the European pair of Al Thakhira and Chriselliam both drew good gate positions, and if they can get the jump on Testa Rossi turning for home, they should prove tough to catch. Vorda merits respect as a group I winner, but having never raced beyond six furlongs -- and never around a turn, for that matter -- I'm having trouble warming up to her chances. That said, this is one of those races where I can't toss anyone with confidence. Street Sailing could be a nice longshot, as her turn-of-foot at Keeneland was exceptional, slow pace or not.
SELECTIONS: Al Thakhira, Testa Rossi, Chriselliam, Street Sailing

Distaff: Royal Delta should be able to make the lead while breaking from the inside of Beholder, and I don't believe she'll be relinquishing it. I do believe that she was not at her best for the Beldame, but her subsequent training suggests that she is as good as ever, and a three-peat in this race looks very possible. Beholder has a great deal of speed and the ability to accelerate powerfully in the homestretch, but she has never faced a fellow front-runner with the talent of Royal Delta. Princess of Sylmar can certainly win this, and it's great to have her in the race, but I feel like she'll need a destructive pace duel from Beholder and Royal Delta in order to win, as the latter two have been training so well for this race that I find it hard to envision them both losing.
SELECTIONS: Royal Delta, Beholder, Princess of Sylmar, Authenticity

An early look at the BC Classic field

With the Breeders' Cup pre-entries being released tomorrow morning, and with final entries being taken in just one week, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at the expected field for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I), if only to see how it changes during the next ten days.

Here is the projected field, complete with expected jockey assignments:

Declaration of War - Joseph O'Brien
Flat Out - Joel Rosario
Fort Larned - Brian Hernandez
Game On Dude - Mike Smith
Graydar - Edgar Prado
Last Gunfighter - Javier Castellano
Moreno - Jose Ortiz
Mucho Macho Man - Gary Stevens
Palace Malice - John Velazquez
Paynter - Martin Garcia
Ron the Greek - Jose Lezcano
Will Take Charge - Luis Saez

Graydar is expected to be pre-entered in both the Classic and the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I), with the former being his first preference.

One other possible Classic entrant is Planteur, who has finished third in the last two runnings of the $10 million Dubai World Cup (UAE-I). The six-year-old son of Danehill Dancer was being seriously considered for a start in the Classic, but following a twelfth-place finish in the Qatar Prix Dollar (Fr-II) on October 5th, his status is somewhat in question.

Fort Larned breezes for the second time in four days

With the Breeders' Cup less than two weeks away, defending Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) winner Fort Larned breezed five furlongs in a bullet 1:00 3/5 this morning at Churchill Downs, which marked the second work in four days for the five-year-old son of E Dubai.

Trained by Ian Wilkes, Fort Larned had previously breezed a half-mile in :49 flat on October 19th, which was his third work since winning the $175,000 Homecoming Classic Stakes on September 28th at Churchill Downs.

Fort Larned won the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic by a half-length over Mucho Macho Man, capping a season that also saw him win the Whitney Handicap (gr. I), Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (gr. III), Skip Away Stakes (gr. III), and Challenger Stakes, as well as placing second in the Alysheba Stakes (gr. II) and third in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I). This year, Fort Larned has won the Stephen Foster Handicap (gr. I) in addition to his victory in the Homecoming Classic.

Breeders' Cup: The Kittens are Coming

Horse racing is all about favorites. Everyone has their favorite race horse, jockey, and trainer. Some of the more intense fans even sub-divide these categories, having favorite turf sprinters, dirt milers, Europeans, and so on. And of course, handicapping races is all about the favorites, either liking them or disliking them. On a similar note, we all have our favorite tracks (if pressed, I'd say mine is Santa Anita), we all have our favorite great racehorse of the past (Dr. Fager gets my vote), and we all have our favorite racing moment--although it's probably unwise to get two passionate racing fans started on a topic like that. :)

As far as favorite stallions go, mine is undoubtedly Kitten's Joy. Seeing him succeed so dramatically in this country -- despite being a turf horse with a very grassy pedigree! -- has been very exciting, and I have gotten in the habit of checking the leading general sire list daily to make sure he's still on top. I am so fond of his progeny that I check the entries most every day to see if any are running, and if any are entered in stakes races -- well, watching them could very well be the highlight of the weekend's racing action!

Thus, it is with great excitement that I have watched this year's crop of Kittens progress toward the Breeders' Cup, in hopes of seeing them add further success to their sire's already impressive record. But if you had told me two months ago that Kitten's Joy would have as many as seven runners in the Breeders' Cup, I would have said it was highly unlikely. Yet here we are, less than two weeks out from the Cup, and that is the number of Kittens currently targeting Breeders' Cup races.

For the enjoyment of fellow Kitten's Joy fans, here are brief profiles on each potential Breeders' Cup starter, with their expected Breeders' Cup race in parenthesis:

BIG BLUE KITTEN (Breeders' Cup Turf): His cute name aside, Big Blue Kitten has been more of a lion than a kitten this season, winning the United Nations Stakes (gr. I) and Sword Dancer Handicap (gr. I) during the summer and placing second by a nose in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (gr. I) at the end of September. With a record like that, Big Blue Kitten enters the Breeders' Cup Turf as one of the favorites to win. Trained by Chad Brown, Big Blue Kitten possesses an exceptional turn-of-foot, a showed in the United Nations that he loves the very firm turf he will find at Santa Anita.

BOBBY'S KITTEN (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf): After breaking his maiden second-time out at Saratoga in a spectacular performance, this ultra-talented Chad Brown-trainee contested the Pilgrim Stakes (gr. III) at Belmont Park, where he romped to a breathtaking 6 1/4-length triumph over eight rivals. Possessing the tactical speed to contend from the start, as well as an explosive finishing kick, Bobby's Kitten looks to be a standout contender in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

GRANNY MC'S KITTEN (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf): After rallying from well back to finish second by a nose in her debut at Saratoga, Granny Mc's Kitten showed improved tactical speed in claiming the P. G. Johnson Stakes second time out for trainer Chad Brown. In her most recent start, she finished fourth in the Miss Grillo Stakes (gr. III) at Belmont after racing wide and making a strong move to reach contention at the eighth pole. With a better trip, she could definitely contend for a better finish in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, a race won by Stephanie's Kitten in 2011.

KITTEN'S DUMPLINGS (Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf): With eight starts in the span of ten months, Kitten's Dumplings has already had a very busy season. Yet believe it or not, she is showing no signs of slowing down, as her late-running victory in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. I) implies. Trained by Mike Maker, this full-sister to Granny Mc's Kitten will need a strong pace in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf to set up her finishing kick, but the ten-furlong distance should suit her just fine.

KITTEN KABOODLE (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf): Although Kitten Kaboodle placed second in her first two starts -- both in maiden special weight company -- this did not prevent Kitten Kaboodle from running as the second wagering choice in Keeneland's JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (gr. III), which she won by nearly five lengths in a hugely impressive performance. Trained by Chad Brown, Kitten Kaboodle's explosive acceleration should be a major asset in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, where the ability to out-finish the European invaders is key to winning the race.

LIEN ON KITTEN (Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf): Unbeaten in two starts for trainer Wayne Catalano, Lien On Kitten broke her maiden with a powerful late run going a mile on the turf, then unleashed a similarly impressive finish to win the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies Stakes in her most recent start. While the Breeders' Cup will be a big step up in class, Lien On Kitten appears ready for the challenge.

REAL SOLUTION (Breeders' Cup Turf): Since arriving in the United States after beginning his career in Italy, Real Solution has become a force to reckon with in major turf stakes. A narrowly-beaten third-place finish in the Woodford Reserve Manhattan Handicap (gr. I) was followed by a head defeat in the Arlington Million (gr. I), a race in which Real Solution was placed first via the disqualification of the winner. Most recently, this Chad Brown-trainee was beaten a length while third in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (gr. I), flattening out just a bit after looming a potential winner with a furlong to go. With this in mind, the downhill portion of Santa Anita's downhill turf course should play in Real Solution's favor, reducing the stamina requirements of the twelve-furlong race and setting up Real Solution for a stronger finish.

Breeders' Cup Turf: The Americans may have the edge

In recent years, the Breeders' Cup Turf has been dominated by European shippers. Foreign-trained horses have won four of the last five runnings of the race, and swept the top two positions in both 2008 and 2010. Last year, it took a near world-record performance for American representatives Little Mike and Point of Entry to deny the Irish-trained St. Nicholas Abbey a victory in the Turf, thus ending the three-year European domination of the race.

As of a couple weeks ago, it seemed very possible that 2012 would wind up as an aberration. Potential European participation in the 2013 Breeders' Cup Turf appeared to be strong, with three-time European classic winner Camelot, Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (Fr-I) winner Flintshire, and even the powerful four-time Group I winner Novellist under consideration for the race.

Then things kind of fell apart. Camelot was injured during a morning gallop on October 14th and retired. Novellist missed the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I) due to illness, then had his schedule changed to target the Japan Cup (Jpn-I) in late November. Flintshire was simply removed from consideration.

All of a sudden, the European force was decimated. Not so on the other side of the Atlantic. With Little Mike back in form after his victory in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (gr. I), Point of Entry back in serious training following an early-summer injury, and a host of new American contenders in the mix, it seems likely that the Americans will have a very good chance at defeating the Europeans once again.

That said, what remains of the European brigade is a very potent pair of runners that could definitely make their presence felt under the right circumstances. The top contender would appear to be The Fugue, an Irish mare coming off of an excellent win in the Red Mills Irish Champion Stakes (Ire-I), in which she defeated the powerful three-time group I winner Al Kazeem in decisive fashion, with Irish Derby (Ire-I) winner Trading Leather finishing a well-beaten third. The Fugue already has experience in the Breeders' Cup, having finished third in last year's Filly and Mare Turf (gr. I) despite a very troubled trip.

The other European known to be under serious consideration is Grandeur, who shipped to the United States late last year for a three-race campaign that saw him win the Hollywood Turf Cup Stakes (gr. II) and Twilight Derby (gr. II), in addition to placing second in the Hollywood Derby (gr. I) with a tremendous late rally. His best performance this year was a runner-up effort in the Sky Bet York Stakes (Eng-II) in July, in which he defeated two-time Northern Dancer Stakes (gr. I) winner Wigmore Hall, as well as The Apache, who finished first in the Arlington Million Stakes (gr. I) this summer before being disqualified and placed second for interference. Interestingly, Grandeur placed seventh in that same race, beaten 4 1/2 lengths after getting agitated in the paddock.

It is possible that additional European runners could enter the fray; with Camelot out, trainer Aiden O'Brien could quite possibly come up with another contender from his deep arsenal of talented racehorses. But at the present time, it appears that the American hopefuls will outnumber their European counterparts on at least a 6-1 basis, and unless The Fugue or Grandeur can come up with their best efforts on November 2nd, I would be tempted -- for the first time in many years! -- to side with the Americans in this year's Breeders' Cup Turf.

Ever Rider looks to emulate Calidoscopio in Breeders' Cup Marathon

No one who witnessed last year's Breeders' Cup Marathon will ever forget the unprecedented rally turned in by Calidoscopio, the nine-year-old Argentinean-bred that rallied from more than twenty lengths back to win by 4 1/4 lengths. It was without doubt one of the most amazing performances in the history of the Breeders' Cup -- perhaps in the history of the entire sport! -- and it was made all the more amazing by the fact that Calidoscopio had prepped for the Marathon in his native country. There have been several Argentinean-bred horses that have won Breeders' Cup races -- Paseana and Bayakoa come to mind -- but they all prepped for the Breeders' Cup in the United States, not Argentina.

But as unprecedented as Calidoscopio's feat may have been, history could be about to repeat itself this November. Another Argentinean has arrived.

The horse's name is Ever Rider. He is a five-year-old grey/roan son of Rider Stripes out of Alleg Dancer, by Il Corsaro. On the surface, his career record does not look very good. From twenty-three starts, he has won just four races, and earned just $76,513. In fact, he has only ever run in one graded stakes race, that being the grade II Clasico General Belgrano at Hipodromo Argentina De Palermo. The 1 9/16th-mile race is a "Win and You're In" prep for the Breeders' Cup Marathon, and was won last year by Calidoscopio in his final start before the Breeders' Cup. This year, the race was won by Ever Rider, at odds of 28-1. Shortly afterward, his owner -- Alberto Ruben Ibanez -- announced that Ever Rider would be shipped to Santa Anita in the fall to contest the Breeders' Cup.

Fast forward to the present, and Ever Rider has already recorded five workouts at Santa Anita Park, including a bullet half-mile breeze in :46 3/5 on October 7th. With a little more than three weeks remaining until the Breeders' Cup, Ever Rider seems to have settled in nicely, and looms as a major contender for the race in which his compatriot made history last year.

There is still much to be learned about Ever Rider. We don't know who will ride him. We don't know his preferred running style. In regard to the latter question, we may not know the answer until the first two or three furlongs of the Breeders' Cup Marathon have elapsed.

But what we do know is this -- history can repeat itself this November at Santa Anita, and for those who weren't on board when Calidoscopio won at 17-1 last year, now is your chance to strike with another talented Argentinean-bred.
