BREEDERS' CUP COUNTDOWN -- October 13th, 2012

Compared to the last two Saturdays, this Saturday is a bit light in terms of major racing action -- there's only one grade I race on the scheduled, as opposed to the ten on September 29th and the seven on October 6th. Nevertheless, there are a number of intriguing races to be run, and it's still possible that a couple of today's entrants could come back and compete in the Breeders' Cup three weeks from now. So let's start handicapping!

Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (gr. I)

There is a lot of talent in this deep eight-horse field, and picking the winner will not be an easy task. The morning line favorite is Stephanie's Kitten, a grade I winner and Breeders' Cup champion that most recent won the Lake Placid Stakes (gr. II) at Saratoga. Clearly, she is a very good filly that deserves a great deal of respect, but making her first start in about two months, she may need to get a race under her belt.

If that is the case, than Samitar and Somali Lemonade, the 1-2 finishers in the Garden City Stakes (gr. I) on September 15th. Samitar has accomplished more during her career -- she is an Irish classic winner, don't forget -- but Somali Lemonade was closing fast in the Garden City, and won the Jessamine Stakes (gr. III) here at Keeneland as a juvenile. Don't overlook her just because she wasn't won in a year -- some of her losses have been deceptively good, and under the right conditions, she can win this race.

Tannery, an Irish-bred filly that rallied to be third in the Garden City, could also contend in her second U.S. start. Off turf would greatly help her chances.

Centre Court beat Stephanie's Kitten two starts back in the Lake George Stakes (gr. II), then finished a half-length behind her in the Lake Placid. Her biggest advantage over Stephanie's Kitten may be that she possesses a bit more tactical speed, and in a race that lacks speed, that could enable her to get the jump on her rival and potentially hand her another defeat.

Dayatthespa has won all four of her starts this year, including a grade III here at Keeneland. Trained by Chad Brown, who has really been on a roll recently, Dayattthespa is the only true speed horse in the race, and that natural edge may give her an insurmountable advantage over her rivals.

Better Lucky won a grade II three starts back, but was soundly beaten in the Lake Placid last time out. Treasured Up won an allowance race here at Keeneland during the spring meet, but has yet to win a stakes race and appears to be in a bit deep.

Like I said, this is a tough race to handicap, but I am going to side with Dayattthespa and hope that her speed will enable her to win the race in gate-to-wire fashion. She soundly beat Somali Lemonade two starts back, and if she runs back to that effort, I'm confident that she will be the one to beat in the homestretch.

Selection: Dayattthespa

Knickerbocker Stakes (gr. II)

Even though Boisterous is coming off of a ninth-place finish in the Arlington Million (gr. I), his overall record makes him the one to beat as he attempts to win this race for the second straight year. His main opposition may come from Sky Blazer, who most recently finished third in the Bernard Baruch Handicap (gr. II), rallying well into a slow pace after getting off to a very poor start.

Bombaguia could contend if he runs as well as he did last time out in the Bowling Green Handicap (gr. II), in which he set a very slow pace before losing by a head in the final strides. Shortening up in distance should help his chances.

The Japanese-bred Barocci is intriguing, for the Cristophe Clement-trainee has run quite well in a quartet of allowance races during the summer, but nine furlongs may be a tad bit too short for him.

Selection: Bombaguia

Spend a Buck Handicap (gr. III)

Morning line favorite Cash Rules has compiled an excellent record at Calder this season, winning three stakes races and placing second in two others. However, he will be giving away between 4 to 10 pounds to his six rivals, and I believe that under those conditions he can be beat.

The colt I like is the three-year-old Csaba, who is coming off of dull efforts in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) and the Equalize Stakes. However, he had excuses in both cases, and he is now returning to the track over which his best efforts have come. Plus, he is receiving seven pounds from Cash Rules.

Selection: Csaba

Hawthorne Derby (gr. III)

With so many horses entered in this nine-furlong turf race, and with rain expected, and with no clear-cut favorite entered, this race looks like a real mess to handicap. All Squared Away, most recently seventh in the Del Mar Derby (gr. II), is the morning line favorite at 4-1. He's good on turf, and possesses a good late kick, but I think that Control Tower and Finale look better. The first-mentioned colt has won three straight races against lesser company, and showcased a terrific turn-of-foot last time out. Finale had good form as a two-year-old last year, winning the Summer Stakes (gr. III) and running well in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. I), but went to the sidelines and did not return to the races until August, when he ran tenth in the Equalizer Stakes at Saratoga in August. On the surface, that looks like a terrible effort, but was checked on the first turn and was only beaten 4 3/4 lengths in the end. Given his subsequent sharp training, I think that he is sitting on a pretty big effort today.

Selection: Control Tower

Lava Man California Cup Classic Stakes

John Scott is the morning line favorite based off of a solid victory in the Harry F. Brubaker Stakes and a sharp second in the San Diego Handicap (gr. II), and would loom as a very difficult horse to beat if this race were on a synthetic track. But this is dirt, and whether or not he will handle it is almost impossible to determine. His lone start on dirt yielded a so-so fourth in an allowance race -- but that was his first start in 2 1/2 years, and it was a 6-1/2 furlong sprint. So I guess the wisest thing to do is assume that John Scott's class will enable him to handle the dirt as well as the synthetics, although until he actually proves he can do so, we can't be positive.

Should John Scott disappoint on the dirt, then Rousing Sermon or Holladay Road could pull off an upset. The first-mentioned colt has not won in nine starts since taking the California Cup Juvenile Stakes last fall, but has run quite well in defeat numerous times and almost never fails to fire. Holladay Road was beaten just a neck in this race last year and is quite good over the Santa Anita dirt, so his less-than-stellar recent efforts over synthetic tracks can be forgiven.

Thirtyfirststreet has also shown an affinity for dirt, and could be an intriguing contender at odds of 8-1.

Selection: John Scott, with utmost respect for Rousing Sermon

Handsome Mike stuns Pennsylvania Derby rivals at 19-1

Sent off as the longest shot on the board at 19-1, it is clear that few people expected Handsome Mike to win the $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) this afternoon at Parx Racing. Yet in the end that is exactly what he did, holding off a late run from Macho Macho to pull off a surprising upset.

Ridden to victory by Irad Ortiz Jr., Handsome Mike got off to an excellent start and soon took command of the early lead while facing only mild pressure along the inside from Alpha. Golden Ticket, Csaba, Macho Macho, and Stephanoatsee were all up close as well in a very tight field, while Casual Trick was content to trail early by a substantial margin.

The early pace was very slow, with Handsome Mike running the opening quarter in :25, the half in :49 4/5, and three-quarters in 1:14 flat. But as the field made their way around the final turn and into the homestretch, things began to heat up. First, Csaba loomed boldly in the three path before retreating to finish last. Then Alpha made a run to challenge for the lead along the rail before flattening out. Next, Stephanoatsee loomed a menace along the inside before giving way as well. Finally, Golden Ticket and Macho Macho came running on the outside with Macho Macho eventually emerging the strongest challenge for the win. But while the son of Macho Uno did put in a good run, Handsome Mike already had the race sewn up, coasting home in front by two lengths to win the nine-furlong race in 1:51 3/5.

Golden Ticket out-finished Stephanoatsee for third, while Casual Trick, Alpha, and Csaba completed the order of finish.

The winner is a son of Scat Daddy out of the Smart Strike mare Classic Strike. Trained by Leandro Mora and owned by Reddam Racing, Handsome Mike has now won two of his eight ten starts, with one second and one third as well. He has accumulated earnings of $756,780.

BREEDERS' CUP COUNTDOWN -- September 22nd, 2012

It is fitting that the first day of autumn brings us the first weekend of final Breeders' Cup prep races, as the transition from summer to autumn traditionally marks the beginning of the Breeders' Cup season.

Later this afternoon, a number of promising Breeders' Cup aspirants will try and take the final steps toward their respective cup races while competing at a variety of venues across the east coast. The highlights of the day are at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania, where a pair of million-dollar races are to be held. Among the major contenders entered are Alpha, Golden Ticket, Macho Macho, Questing, and My Miss Aurelia.

We shall begin our weekend handicapping with the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) for three-year-old colts.

Nine furlongs on the Parx Racing dirt track

The stars of the field are clearly Alpha and Golden Ticket, the dead-heat winners of the Travers Stakes (gr. I) last month. In that prestigious ten-furlong race, they both ran similar races, sitting a couple of lengths off the pace before eventually hitting the wire together with little between them. Perhaps Golden Ticket displayed a bit more acceleration in the homestretch, briefly leaving his rival behind turning for home, but he also saved ground throughout while Alpha took the overland route. The nine furlong distance of this race -- an eighth of a mile shorter than the Travers -- may appear to benefit Golden Ticket, as that colt led Alpha by a length following the first nine furlongs of the Travers, but Ramon Dominguez may have moved a bit late on Alpha that day. All told, the two colts appear very evenly matched in this spot -- assuming that they both run back to their Travers form.

The question is, will they? We can assume that Alpha will do so, as he has proven very consistent throughout his career and was expected to win the Travers. Golden Ticket is more of a question mark. Prior to the Travers, his only victory had come in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park -- and that was the sixth start of his career. Furthermore, he came into the Travers off of a runner-up effort in an allowance race at Churchill Downs. These facts lend support to the theory that Golden Ticket's Travers may have been a one-time fluke.

On the other hand, one has to give credit to Golden Ticket for turning in an effort like that off of a nearly four-month layoff. Assuming it didn't take too much out of him, Golden Ticket could be sitting on another move forward -- and if that is the case, then he could prove very tough to beat today.

Moving onward from the top two betting choices, we come to Macho Macho. Trained by Steve Asmussen, the son of Macho Uno has shown promised throughout his career, running well at Fair Grounds during the winter before winning a seven-furlong allowance race at Churchill Downs by two lengths. He then cracked the trifecta in the Matt Winn Stakes (gr. III) and Long Branch Stakes, losing the latter race by just a half-length, before winning the West Virgiani Derby (gr. II) by a half-length in his most recent start. Finishing second to him on that occasion was Bourbon Courage, who subsequently returned to dominate the $500,000 Super Derby (gr. II). If the top two fail to fire their best shots, this colt can more than pick up the pieces, but he would need some racing luck in order to do so -- I don't think he has enough of an edge to get caught four-wide around both turns and still win, if you know what I mean.

Csaba and Casual Trick are also intriguing contenders. The first-mentioned colt has compiled quite a record on dirt, winning or placing in seven of his nine starts over the surface. Three starts back, he won the El Kaiser Stakes at Calder Race Course with a Beyer speed figure of 99, which would make him very competitive in this spot. Furthermore, he seems to possess a tactical edge over this field in terms of early speed, as he is the only horse in the field to routinely show in interest in taking the early lead. I can certainly envision a scenario where Csaba grabs the early lead, sets slow fractions, and holds off the late runners to pull off an upset.

Casual Trick showed a great deal of promise last winter, breaking his maiden at Churchill and backing it up with a strong second in the Gulfstream Park Derby on the first day of the year, but breathing issues kept him from living up to his potential in his next three starts. Given a bit of a break, he returned in good form and won a pair of allowance races here at Parx in decisive fashion, signaling that he could be sitting on a career-best effort today.

Stephanoatsee and Handsome Mike are the two longest shots in the field, but both have credentials. The former colt ran second to Alpha in the Count Fleet Stakes back in January before going to the sidelines with an injury, yet returned in August to win an allowance race at Delaware Park in terrific fashion while showing no signs of rust. Clearly, he can move forward off of that effort, but from a speed-figure perspective, he stills has some improving to do if he wants to catch Alpha and Golden Ticket.

As for Handsome Mike, he has competed well in seven consecutive graded stakes races dating back to last November, but has failed win any of them. One thing to love about him is his consistency -- he has run Beyer speed figures of 80-88 range in eight of his nine starts -- but that probably won't be enough to secure more than a minor award in a race like this.

As you can see, this is a tough race to handicap, with practically every horse having a serious shot at winning. Believe it or not, I am leaning toward either Csaba or Casual Trick for the victory, feeling that race won't set up for Alpha and Golden Ticket, despite their impressive credentials.

Other Races of Note:

At Parx Racing . . .

Race 9: The $300,000 Gallant Bob Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for three-year-olds, has drawn some of the best sophomore sprinters in the country and looks to be a very evenly-matched race. Trinniberg is the 9-5 favorite by merit of the three graded stakes races he has won this year, but he is coming off of a poor effort in the King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) and is going to have to rebound sharply to win this race. Currency Swap has beaten Trinniberg in two of their three meetings, but he too is coming off of a sub-par showing in the King's Bishop. Chick Lang Stakes winner Il Villano and Jersey Shore Stakes (gr. III) winner Well Spelled probably have the best chances at pulling off an upset if the top two falter, but I am going to side with Currency Swap regardless of his last performance and hope that he rebounds to his usual consistent self this afternoon.

Race 10: The $1,000,000 Cotillion Stakes (gr. I) for three-year-old fillies may have drawn just four entrants, but the race has the potential to be one of the best of the year if everything goes according to plan. The heavy favorites are Questing, winner of the Alabama Stakes (gr. I) and Coaching Club American Oaks (gr. I) during the summer, and My Miss Aurelia, the undefeated champion juvenile filly of 2011. Of the two, Questing has more positives on her side, such as terrific recent form and impressive speed figures, but My Miss Aurelia should be sharper today than she was in her sophomore debut at Saratoga, and a return to her 2011 form would make her very competitive against Questing.

At Belmont Park . . .

Race 9: Four-time grade I winner Turbulent Descent and Eclipse champion female sprinter Musical Romance are the two top contenders in the $200,000 Gallant Bloom Handicap (gr. II), a 6-1/2 furlong prep for the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (gr. I), but they may possibly be upstaged by a pair of promising three-year-olds. Emma's Encore and Judy the Beauty, who were separated by just a nose last time out in the Prioress Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga, figure to give their elders a run for the money, regardless of whether they win or lose. Mildly Offensive could also be very competitive off of an eye-catching victory in the Big Bambu Stakes at Saratoga last month.

At Delaware Park . . .

Race 7: Three-year-old turf horses are the stars of the Saturday program, with eleven of them scheduled to head to post for the $200,000 Kent Stakes (gr. III) at a distance of nine furlongs. In a deep field full of evenly-matched contenders, the consistent graded stakes performer Lucky Chappy, American Derby (gr. III) winner Cozzetti, recent allowance winner Optimizer, and four-time stakes runner-up Excaper are the favorites. It's very difficult to say for certain which will emerge of top -- or if one of the seven other entrants will pull off an upset -- but it should be a terrific race to watch.

Pennsylvania Derby Entries: Alpha, Golden Ticket headline field

Alpha and Golden Ticket, who finished in a dead-heat for the win in last month's Travers Stakes (gr. I), will face each other again on Saturday in the $1,000,000 Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) at Parx Racing.

Other major contenders in the nine-furlong race include West Virginia Derby (gr. II) winner Macho Macho and recent allowance winner Casual Trick and Stephanoatsee, both of whom are stakes-placed.

Adding to the intrigue of the race is the fact that Alpha and Golden Ticket will have to carry up to ten pounds more than their rivals, thanks to their shared victory in the Travers.

HOWE GREAT WINS THE PALM BEACH STAKES!

Howe Great turned a pace stalking trip into an impressive victory in the $150,000 Palm Beach Stakes (gr. III) this afternoon at Gulfstream Park, holding off a late-running Dullahan to win the nine-furlong turf race in a sharp 1:46.56.

Ridden to victory by John Velazquez, Howe Great broke fastest of all in the field of six, but soon settled into the second position along the rail as longshot Scorcher raced away to set a moderate early pace of :23.87 and :47.52 while leading by three-quarters of a length. Csaba was tucked into third along the inside, followed on the outside by Coalport. Dullahan, making his first start since finishing fourth in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I), was content to race in fifth early on, while Argentine Tango was the trailer by a large margin.

UNION RAGS WINS THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH STAKES!

Union Rags made his three-year-old debut a winning one, blowing past Discreet Dancer and News Pending at the top of the stretch before coasting home to an easy victory in the $400,000 Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II).

Unraced since finishing second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) last November, Union Rags was sent off as the 6-5 second choice in the Fountain of Youth, behind only the undefeated Todd Pletcher-trainee Discreet Dancer. Under a perfect ride from new rider Julien Leparoux, Union Rags broke quickest of all, but soon settled back into the fourth position as Discreet Dancer set the early pace. News Pending, who broke just a step slowly, was rushed into contention by jockey Kent Desormeaux, rallying past horses on the far outside before settling into the second position. Casual Trick was racing in third toward the rail, with Union Rags right on his outside. Fort Loudon was sitting in fifth, followed by Neck 'n Neck, who had attempted to secure racing room along the rail before being forced to steady off heels. Csaba was content to trail early on.

TRIPLE CROWN COUNTDOWN -- February 26th, 2012

During the course of this year's Triple Crown trail, we have seen a number of promising horses stamp themselves as serious contenders for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), including Alpha, I'll Have Another, Out of Bounds, El Padrino, and Castaway. But those prep races, as exciting and interesting as they were, won't hold a candle to the excitement that will be generated when Derby favorite Union Rags takes on Algorithms and Discreet Dancer and the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) in what should prove to be the biggest and most influential prep race so far.
