Dynamic Strike wins Miracle Wood Stakes

Dynamic Strike made his stakes debut a successful one when he rallied to defeat Where's Dominic by a length in the $125,000 Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel Park.

With jockey Julien Pimentel aboard, Dynamic Strike settled back in fourth place early on in the one-mile race, about four or five lengths behind pace-setting Yougotthatgoinforu. Alpha Mike Foxtrot and Vegas No Show were tracking the pace in second and third, while Where's Dominic and Lunar Rock were the trailers.

Through fractions of :24.02, :47.28, and 1:13.55 seconds, Yougotthatgoinforu continued to lead the way, but turning for home Vegas No Show slipped through along the rail to grab the lead and appeared to be on his way to victory. However, Yougotthatgoinforu had something left in the tank, and gamely clung to his advantage as the eighth pole neared.

But then, in the blink of an eye, the rest of the field had caught up with them. For a few moments, all six of the runners were spread across the race track with little more than a length between them. But coming down to the finish, Where's Dominic and Dynamic Strike pulled clear of the rest, with the latter eventually edging the former to win the race in 1:40.58 seconds.

Lunar Rock rallied up the fence to finish third, followed by Yougotthatgoinforu and Vegas No Show. Alpha Mike Foxtrot stumbled and fell in deep stretch. Unfortunately, he was too severely injured to save, and had to be euthanized.

The winner is trained by Dick Small and owned by Fitzhugh LLC. A son of Smart Strike out of the Deputy Minister mare Dynamic Deputy, Dynamic Strike has now compiled a record of 3-0-0 from 4 starts.

Triple Crown Countdown 2-9-13

This weekend is a bit light in terms of Kentucky Derby prep races -- actually, there are no official preps on the agenda -- so instead of simply focusing on the day's best races, we shall begin today's Triple Crown Countdown with a quick look at the first Kentucky Derby future wager pool, which opened yesterday.

My first thought upon seeing the odds was that there are several severe overlays. Imagine this -- there are twenty-four betting interests. Fully eleven of them -- Capo Bastone, Code West, Delhomme, Den's Legacy, Dynamic Sky, Falling Sky, Frac Daddy, Mylute, Super Ninety Nine, Vyjack, and Will Take Charge -- are 99-1 or higher, and a twelfth -- Uncaptured -- currently sits at 96-1.

In my opinion, the best value in the pool is Code West. What's not to like? He's trained by Bob Baffert. He has a strong mile-and-a-quarter pedigree. He just finished second in a strong allowance race at Santa Anita Park, earning a Beyer speed figure of 94. In contrast, that is a higher figure than anything Flashback (20-1), Oxbow (48-1), and Violence (9-1) have earned. Furthermore, Code West is bound for a graded stakes race next time out, and a victory -- which is certainly not out of the question -- would drastically lower his odds in future wager pool #2.

Capo Bastone, Dynamic Sky, Frac Daddy, and Super Ninety Nine also look like exceptional values. The latter colt earned a Beyer of 100 when defeating Code West in that recent allowance race, and that 100 is among the highest figures earned by a member of this three-year-old crop. And Frac Daddy -- wasn't he on everyone's Derby lists prior to his defeat in the Holy Bull? If you're willing to forgive his poor effort, which was surely the result of a hoof injury suffered early in the race, then I think now would be the time to lock in a great price.

Another colt that looks a bit high-priced to me is Holy Bull winner Itsmyluckyday, who currently sits at 20-1. In contrast, Shanghai Bobby -- whom he defeated in the Holy Bull -- is 9-1. Assuming Itsmyluckyday wins the Florida Derby, or even finishes a close second, he'll likely be a lot lower than 20-1 on Derby day.

****

A couple of other things to add before we move on to handicapping today's races… First off, it has been confirmed that Uncaptured, who has been dealing with hoof issues since his victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) last November, is pointing toward a start in either the Spiral Stakes (gr. III) or the Rushaway Stakes on March 23rd. He still isn't back on the work tab, but it shouldn't be long now before he turns in his first breeze of the year.

Also, Titletown Five, who broke his maiden in spectacular fashion for trainer D. Wayne Lukas last October, turned in his second breeze of the year this morning when he traversed a half-mile in :48.20 at Oaklawn Park. It was the second-fastest of sixty-two such morning works, signaling that the colt could be back to the races within the next month or so.

****

Time to start handicapping! We'll begin with the Miracle Wood Stakes at Laurel, the only stakes for three-year-old colts scheduled for this afternoon.

Miracle Wood Stakes
8 furlongs on the Laurel Park main track

As I write this, two of the eight entrants have been scratched, leaving a field of just six to contest the $125,000 stakes.

Heavily favored on the morning line at 7-5 is Vegas No Show, winner of the Dover Stakes and runner-up in the Nashua Stakes (gr. II) last year. However, his two most recent efforts have been below par for him -- a 28 1/2-length defeat in the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) was followed by a 5 3/4-length loss in the Jerome Stakes (gr. II). On the other hand, his last two workouts have been very sharp, including a bullet five-furlong breeze, and he looks poised to turn in a much-improved performance.

Alpha Mike Foxtrot has plenty of experience, having raced ten times as a juvenile, and enters this race off of a runner-up effort to the well-regarded Ore Pass in the Frank Whitely, Jr. Stakes here at Laurel. Previously, he had won the Maryland Juvenile Championship Stakes -- also at Laurel -- with a powerful late rally. Expect to see him rallying fast in the homestretch.

Dynamic Strike, a well-bred son of Smart Strike, has won two consecutive races at a mile in sharp fashion, but is taking a fairly substantial step up in class and will have to be sharp to beat the two favorites. Where's Dominic has won two of his three starts sprinting, but is now stretching beyond six furlongs for the first time. Lunar Rock has finished first, second, or third in nine of his ten starts, but has been beaten soundly by Alpha Mike Foxtrot in his last two starts. Rounding out the field is Yougotthatgoinforu, who wired a one-mile allowance race in December at Penn National. Obviously, he does possess some tactical speed, but this is a much tougher field than the ones he's been facing at Penn National, and he appears to be in a bit deep here.

Selections: Alpha Mike Foxtrot, Vegas No Show, Lunar Rock

Other Races of Note

At Fair Grounds . . .

Race 7: Hard to say if any Triple Crown candidates will emerge from this 8.5-furlong maiden special weight on the turf, but I'll be watching nonetheless to see if Hansen's full brother Gunderson can finally break his maiden. He lost his first two starts by a combined 30 1/2 lengths, but flashed much better form last time out to be beaten just 2 1/4 lengths on the main track here at Fair Grounds. Perhaps he won't win, but he has the speed to be a contender from the start.

Race 10: This six-furlong allowance optional claiming race marks the return of Carson's Crown, a debut winner that hasn't run since finishing a troubled second in the Hollywood Juvenile Championships Stakes (gr. III) last July. Formerly trained by John Sadler, he will make his debut for Michael Stidham in this race. Favorite Uncle, third to Malibu High in a similar event to this one in December; sharp maiden claiming winner Take It Like a Man; and the experienced Tap and Trade are other well-regarded entrants.

At Gulfstream Park . . .

Race 5: Forget the wonderful quartet of graded stakes races later on the card! The highlight of the day for the Triple Crown-obsessed is the 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming race that has drawn such promising names as Little Distorted (3rd in Spectacular Bid Stakes, beat Revolutionary in debut), Declan's Warrior (1st in debut at Belmont; unraced since), Park City (Pletcher-trained maiden winner at Saratoga; unraced since); John Gordon (5th in Sanford for Dale Romans; unraced since); Almost English (5th in Gulfstream Park Derby); and Jay Eye See (7th to Majestic Hussar and Palace Malice in recent allowance; previously broke maiden by daylight.)

Race 6: Todd Pletcher has the favorite in this mile and a sixteenth maiden special weight, the colt in question being Tapulous. A son of (who else!) Tapit, the colt has only run once, finishing a so-so fourth in a six-furlong maiden special weight here at Gulfstream last month. Given that he flashed some good speed that day, I would think that Tapulous will have a good shot at stretching out and stealing this race on the front end. Wabbajack, third to Looking Cool and Doherty in a recent maiden special weight; Dyker Beach, beaten a half-length in a race similar to this one last month; the consistent O T B Bob; and the promising Chad Brown-trainee Saint Vigeur are the other main contenders, the latter colt looking especially strong.

Race 7: Todd Pletcher also has the favorite in this race, a 1 1/16th miles allowance race on the turf. His runner here is Jack Milton, who was highly impressive breaking his maiden under these same conditions last month. The possessor of an exceptional turn-of-foot, Jack Milton looks tough to beat in this spot. The speedy Play It Loud; the stakes-placed Newfound Zapper, and the well-bred stretch-out sprinter Sayaad are the other logical contenders.

At Santa Anita . . .

Race 7: Nine three-year-old colts have been entered in this six-furlong maiden special weight, with the morning line favorite being Bob Baffert's first-timer starter Zee Bros. A son of Brother Derek out of the Montbrook mare Nyanza -- a very different pedigree, don't you agree? -- Zee Bros has been training up a storm for months, and looks ready to win. To be perfectly honest, I think he may launch himself on to everyone's Derby lists tomorrow. Other notable entrants include Bench Press, third to the promising Cabello Del Cielo in a recent maiden special weight; Joelito, unraced since finishing second by a neck to Den's Legacy in a maiden race at Del Mar last summer; and Salutos Amigos, fourth to Let Em Shine sprinting six furlongs on January 19th.

Vyjack narrowly edges Siete de Oros in thrilling Jerome Stakes

He had to dig deep to do it, but even-money favorite Vyjack was able to edge 41-1 shot Siete de Oros to win the $200,000 Jerome Stakes (gr. II) on January 5th at Aqueduct.

Ridden to victory by Cornelio Velasquez, Vyjack flashed speed from the start and soon found himself dueling for the lead with Mudflats through fractions of :24.14 and :47.58. Vegas No Show, Long River, and Siete de Oros were also right in contention, every one of them within two lengths of the lead, while Amerigo Vespucci, Notacatbutallama, and James Jingle were the trailers.

As the horses made their way around the far turn, things began to tighten up. Siete de Oros had squeezed through along the rail to take the lead, but Mudflats, Vyjack, and Vegas No Show were still right their in contention, stretched out across the track with less than a half-length between them. Right behind them sat Long River, Amerigo Vespucci, and Notacatbutallama, meaning that seven of the eight runners had a legitimate shot at winning as the field turned for home.

But in the blink of an eye, those seven shrunk down to just two. As Mudflats and Vegas No Show retreated, Siete de Oros and Vyjack hooked up for command of the lead; neither giving an inch from the eighth pole home.

It was unfortunate that one of the colts had to lose, as both ran winning races, but in the end, Vyjack was just a little bit better. He hit the wire in front by a nose while stopping the clock for a mile and seventy yards in 1:40.67.

Amerigo Vespucci finished well to secure third, while Long River rounded out the superfecta.

Vyjack, a son of Into Mischief out of the Stravinsky mare Life Happened, is now unbeaten in three starts. He is trained by Rudy Rodriguez and owned by Pick Six Racing.

Triple Crown Countdown 1-5-13

Excitement is in the air! The first "official" Kentucky Derby prep race of the year -- "official" meaning a race that offers Kentucky Derby qualification points -- is scheduled to be held later this afternoon at Santa Anita Park.

That race is, of course, the $100,000 Sham Stakes (gr. III), which features Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III) winner Goldencents and the promising Bob Baffert-trained pair Den's Legacy and Manando.

Also on today's schedule is the $200,000 Jerome Stakes (gr. II) at Aqueduct, where promising maiden winners Long River and Mudflats take on the proven stakes-caliber colts Vegas No Show and Vyjack. While it does not offer Kentucky Derby points, it is still a prominent stop on the road to Louisville, and I'm excited to see what happens.

Let's begin!

Sham Stakes (gr. III)
8 furlongs (two-turn mile)

The first of Santa Anita's four official Kentucky Derby preps drew a field of six. You may view the entries here.

The morning line favorite at 4-5 is -- not surprisingly -- Goldencents. The Doug O'Neill-trained son of Into Mischief has done nothing wrong during his brief career, sandwiching victories in a maiden special weight and the million-dollar Delta Jackpot around a runner-up effort to Shanghai Bobby in the prestigious Champagne Stakes (gr. I). On paper, the speedy front-runner looks virtually unbeatable.

However, I think he could be somewhat vulnerable. I felt that his effort in the Champagne was aided to some degree by a track bias, and in the Delta Jackpot, he was all-out to contain the late charge of favored Bern Identity, who was last with five-sixteenths of a mile to go following a very difficult trip.

Of course, regardless of these opinions, Goldencents should be tough to beat, and I will certainly not be surprised if he wins impressively. But I think that Manando could give him a run for the money. The son of Bluegrass Cat began his career with a trio of third-place finishes, including one on November 25th in which he was beaten by the good colts Distinctiv Passion and Belvin, with Appealing Tale further back in fourth. Last time out, he finally broke through with a victory, striding impressively to a gate-to-wire, 5 1/4-length triumph.

Making this race even more interesting is the fact that while Goldencents and Manando have both scored impressive front-running victories, Goldencents does appear to have considerably more early speed. Manando accomplished his maiden victory by running the opening half mile in :48.90 and the second half-mile in :48.77, followed by a final sixteenth in :06.38 seconds. Goldencents, on the other hand, won the Delta Jackpot by blazing the opening half-mile in :46.22, the second half in :51.81, and the final sixteenth in 1:44.89.

Thus, it seems that Goldencents has a strong tactical advantage in this spot, while Manando has a much stronger finishing kick. Perhaps I'm crazy, but I'm going to side with Manando for the victory, in hopes that his strong stretch kick will enable him to reel in Goldencents late in the race, much like Out of Bounds did in this race last year against the speedy Secret Circle.

The remaining Sham entrants have major questions to answer. Den's Legacy rallied strongly to be third in the CashCall Futurity (gr. I), but finished an unimpressive fifth in his lone start on dirt. The same goes for Dry Summer, a stakes winner on turf but eighth in his only effort on dirt. Greely Awesome broke his maiden by 9 1/4 lengths last time out, but that was in a maiden claiming race -- he has finished no better than fourth in maiden special weight company, and trainer Doug O'Neill told DRF.com that the only reason Greely Awesome has been entered is because there were no other suitable races available. Dirty Swagg has proven himself talented enough to be beaten a length in the Real Quiet Stakes, but was most recently seventh in the CashCall Futurity and appears to be in a bit deep here.

Jerome Stakes (gr. II)
1 mile and 70 yards

(You may view the entries here.)

While the Sham Stakes may be the more important prep race, I am actually more excited about watching the Jerome, for one of my top-ranked Derby contenders is entered. The colt in question is Long River, a beautifully-bred son of A.P. Indy out of 2006 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I) winner Round Pond. Owned and bred by Darley, Long River began his career with a pair of decent efforts at Belmont Park, including a runner-up finish to the highly-regarded Delhomme in what could be considered a key race. Most recently, Long River broke through with a three-quarter length triumph over the promising colt Mr. Palmer in a one-mile, 70-yard maiden special weight here at Aqueduct. I feel that there is a lot of improvement still to come from Long River, and while he might not win today, I'm very excited to see how he progresses further down the road.

Long River aside, the morning line favorite at 2-1 is the unbeaten Vyjack, winner of the seven-furlong Traskwood Stakes at Aqueduct last month. While he has been very impressive in both of his victories, he has never run farther than seven furlongs, and has never run around two turns before. These facts, coupled with his sprinter-oriented pedigree, make me suspect that the distance of the Jerome may prove to be just a bit too far for Vyjack.

Mudflats, a son of Tapit, broke his maiden last time out by 3 1/4 lengths for trainer Eddie Keneally, but has since been transferred to the care of Doug O'Neill. There's no denying that Mudflats has talent, but it is worth noting that he was soundly beaten by Long River two starts back, and this will be his first start around two turns.

To me, Vegas No Show is an intriguing contender. Winner of the Dover Stakes three starts back at the same distance as the Jerome, he subsequently finished second to CashCall Futurity (gr. I) winner Violence in the Nashua Stakes (gr. II) before finishing a dismal ninth in the Remsen Stakes (gr. II) without any apparent excuse. He has trained well since then, and a return to his previous form could earn him the victory today.

Notacatbutallama, a two-time stakes winner trained by Todd Pletcher, makes his second start on dirt following a runner-up effort in the Damon Runyon Stakes over a sloppy track. With Ramon Dominguez accepting the mount, I doubt he'll go off at his 12-1 morning line odds.

Rounding out the field are Amerigo Vespucci, twice runner-up to the good colt Whiskey Romeo in stakes races at Laurel; Siete de Oros, third in the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes last time out; and James Jingle, who has finished behind Notacatbutallama in three consecutive stakes events, including the Damon Runyon.

It's not easy making a selection in a wide-open race like this one, but I'll go ahead and side with Long River for the victory, with respect to Vegas No Show and Notacatbutallama.

Other Races of Note

While Gulfstream Park is not offering any stakes action for three-year-olds this weekend, there are nevertheless a trio of interesting maiden and allowance events on the Saturday card that merit watching.

First and foremost to me is the ninth race of the day, a one-mile maiden special weight on the main track. The colt I have my eye on is Pontiff, an unraced half-brother to the recently deceased stallion Pulpit. He is owned by Donegal Racing . . . he is trained by Dale Romans . . . he will be ridden by Joel Rosario . . . sounds like a good combination to me!

There is another one-mile maiden special weight on the card as well -- apparently, there were enough entries to split the race into two divisions. In this race, I am excited to watch the debut of Todd Pletcher's Doherty, a son of Giant's Causeway, as well as The Candidate, a second-time starter from the barn of Nick Zito.

The third race is a one-mile allowance race on the turf, in which the morning line favorite -- following three scratches -- is the stakes-placed colt Thunder Calls, who was most recently seventh in the Dania Beach Stakes.

Out at Santa Anita Park, a 5-1/2 furlong maiden special weight is to be held one race prior to the Sham Stakes. The event has drawn a field of nine, including three colts trained by Bob Baffert -- Chasintheaces, Secretsatmidnight, and Spirited Touch. You can make a case for any of them, as well as Steve Asmussen's promising colt Cabello Del Cielo and John Sadler's Bench Press.

Jerome Stakes draws wide-open field of eight

The $200,000 Jerome Stakes (gr. II), the first of Aqueduct's major prep races for the 2013 Kentucky Derby, has drawn a wide-open field of eight three-year-old colts and geldings looking to begin the year with a graded stakes victory.

The one-mile, seventy-yard race -- which has been held at one mile and in April during recent years -- lacks an obvious favorite. Notable entrants include Vegas No Show, winner of the Dover Stakes but most recently ninth in the Remsen Stakes (gr. II); Traskwood Stakes winner Vyjack; Long River and Mudflats, a pair of promising maiden winners; and two-time minor stakes winner Notacatbutallama.

A trio of stakes-placed runners -- Siete de Oros, Amerigo Vespucci, and James Jingle -- round out the field.

Notably absent from the list of entrants is Gulfport, a well-regarded allowance winner from the barn of Dale Romans. The colt had been expected to ship from Gulfstream Park to contest the Jerome, but will instead await the $400,000 Holy Bull Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream later this month.

Post Positions:
1 Siete de Oros
2 Vyjack
3 Long River
4 Amerigo Vespucci
5 Notacatbutallama
6 Mudflats
7 Vegas No Show
8 James Jingle

Gulfport to contest Jerome Stakes

According to DRF.com, Gulfport -- a highly-regarded allowance winner trained by Dale Romans -- will contest the $200,000 Jerome Stakes (gr. II) on January 5th at Aqueduct.

The colt has been training at Gulfstream Park in Florida for the last month, most recently breezing six furlongs in 1:12.40 on the morning of December 29th. A son of Unbridled's Song out of the Seeking the Gold mare Dream Supreme, Gulfport is a half-brother to 2007 Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) winner Majestic Warrior.

Other colts pointing toward the Jerome include Traskwood Stakes winner Vyjack, Dover Stakes winner Vegas No Show, and the promising maiden winners Mudflats and Long River.

Overanalyze edges Normandy Invasion in thrilling Remsen

In one of the most memorable renewals of the $250,000 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) in recent years, Overanalyze held off a terrific challenge from Normandy Invasion in the Aqueduct homestretch to win the nine-furlong juvenile race by the smallest of margins.

Ridden to victory by Ramon Dominguez, Overanalyze flashed speed from the starts and soon found himself racing in second early on as Delhomme set fractions of :23.99, :48.07, and 1:12.54. Vegas No Show, Stormy Len, Irsaal, and Keep the Canoli were also fairly close to the pace, while Micromanage, Quinzieme Monarque, and Indy's Illusion were the trailers.

As the field made their way around the far turn, Delhomme and Overanalyze began to separate themselves from the remainder of the field. In the meantime, Normandy Invasion was in the process of making a spectacular rally along the inside, and turning for home, he appeared to be on his way to a decisive triumph.

However, Overanalyze had something left in the tank, and battled on gamely when challenged by Normandy Invasion in mid-stretch. The two put on a spectacular show from the eighth pole home, with Overanalyze emerging the winner in a head-bobbing finish. The final time was 1:50.13 seconds.

Delhomme stayed on well to complete the trifecta, while Quinzieme Monarque rounded out the top four.

The winner is trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Mike Repole.

Remsen Stakes Entries: Ten entered in nine-furlong Derby test

A field on ten two-year-old colts will get valuable experience around two turns when they head to post for the $250,000 Remsen Stakes (gr. II) on Saturday at Aqueduct, an early prep for the 2013 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) at Churchill Downs.

The morning line favorite at 2-1 is Delhomme, who broke his maiden last month at Belmont Park traversing a mile in 1:35.52. Trained by Todd Pletcher, the promising son of Dixie Union looks like a deserving favorite given the wide-open nature of this race.

Other contenders include Normandy Invasion, who broke his maiden here at Aqueduct by 9 1/4 lengths; Micromanage and Overanalyze, a promising pair owned by Mike Repole; and Vegas No Show, runner-up in the Nashua Stakes (gr. II) last time out.

Post Positions:

3 Micromanage *
4 Delhomme
5 Keep the Canoli

SHANGHAI BOBBY WINS THE HOPEFUL STAKES!

Shanghai Bobby rallied past Majestic Hussar and Overanalyze entering the Saratoga homestretch to win the $300,000 Hopeful Stakes (gr. II) in dominating fashion last Monday.

Ridden to victory by Rosie Napravnik, Shanghai Bobby got off to a clean start and settled into the fourth position early on as Majetsic Hussar led the way through the opening quarter mile in :22.55 seconds. Overanalyze was 1 1/2 lengths back in second, followed by favored Fortify and the eventual winner. Lawn Man, Bern Identity, and Show Some Magic were next, while Vegas No Show was the early trailer.

Majestic Hussar and Overanalyze continued to lead around the turn, but after running the half-mile in :45.28 seconds, they were both surpassed by Shanghai Bobby, who made a bold three-wide bid to seize command of the lead. From there, the race was over, as Shanghai Bobby coasted home unchallenged to win the six-furlong race by nearly four lengths in the good time of 1:22.72 seconds.

Fortify rallied mildly to secure second over Bern Identity, while Overanalyze, Show Some Magic, Vegas No Show, Majestic Hussar, and Lawn Man completed the order of finish.

The winner is owned by Starlight Racing and trained by Todd Pletcher. Shanghai Bobby is now undefeated in three starts with earnings of $367,000.
