Giant Ryan broke quickly, went straight to the lead, and never looked back en route to a half-length victory in the Vosburgh Stakes (gr. I) this afternoon.
Under jockey Cornelio Velasquez, the Bisnath Parboo-trainee was sent off at 12-1, despite the fact that he was coming off of four straight victories. His task of taking the field gate-to-wire was made easier when Apriority stumbled, interfering with the usually front-running second-choice Euroears, who ended up far behind early.
Giant Ryan led the way through fractions of :22 flat and :44 1/5, then kicked away as the field turned for home. Even-money favorite Trappe Shot had made a menacing-looking run on the turn, but was beginning to flatten out. In the end, it was Force Freeze at 7-1 who provided the stiffest challenge, closing strongly in the final furlong but falling a half-length short of Giant Ryan, who hit the wire in 1:09.10. Caixa Eletronica came on well for third, with Trappe Shot holding fourth.
Earlier on the card, Cape Blanco won the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Invitational (gr. I) as the 3-5 favorite but not in the expected fashion. After tracking a slow pace set by Mission Approved, he made his bid for the lead but could not shake off longshot Dean's Kitten, who charged hard to just miss by a nose. Grassy came on for third, followed by Mission Approved and Winchester.
In the Flower Bowl Invitational (gr. I), Stacelita stormed home the winner as the 1-2 favorite. Coming off of a sharp win in the Beverly D. Stakes (gr. I) at Arlington, she sat off of the pace before blowing past pacesetter Dynaslew in the stretch to win by two lengths. She has now won five grade/group I races and will start next in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Distorted Legacy came on for second at 42-1 while Dynaslew tired to finish third.
