A 3yo to Watch: Tradesman

Although his record reflects that he is still a maiden, Tradesman stamped himself as a very promising three-year-old when he finished first in a one-mile maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park this afternoon, only to be disqualified and placed sixth for interference in the homestretch.

Owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Tom Albertrani, Tradesman entered the race off a fourth-place effort in maiden special weight at Aqueduct on October 30th -- coincidentally, a race in which Tradesman had placed third before being disqualified for interference. Sent off at 4-1 this afternoon against seven rivals, Tradesman settled into fifth-place early on as 1-2 favorite Royal Son led the way through a modest opening quarter in :24.06, then swept into contention on the outside through a half-mile in :47.23. Racing wide around the turn, Tradesman continued to steadily advance and challenged the leaders at the top of the stretch, but drifted in at the eighth pole and caused Flashy Jewel to steady and lose momentum. Tradesman then gamely out-fought Royal Son to the wire to win by a half-length, stopping the clock in a decent 1:37.30, but a rider's objection was lodged and Tradesman was soon disqualified and placed behind Flashy Jewel in the order of finish. As a result, Royal Son was declared the official winner for trainer Todd Pletcher and owner WinStar Farm.

Nevertheless, Tradesman made a very good impression this afternoon, overcoming a wide trip and moderate early pace to cross the wire first. Bred by Darley, Tradesman is a son of Street Sense out of the unraced Thunder Gulch mare Mari's Thunder. With a pedigree like that, he should have no trouble stretching out in distance further down the road. He looks like a very promising colt!
