General a Rod Returns to Action at Gulfstream Park

2014 Gulfstream Park Derby winner General a Rod, who hasn't run since finishing seventh in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), has been entered in a seven-furlong allowance optional claiming race on January 14th at Gulfstream Park.

The Mike Maker-trained colt has drawn post five in a field of seven, with his most accomplished rivals being 2012 American Derby (gr. III) winner Cozzetti, 2013 Gallant Bob Stakes (gr. III) winner City of Weston, and Belmont allowance winner Three Alarm Fire, who is the only horse to have ever defeated the promising stakes winner Liam's Map.

Prior to going to the sidelines last summer, General a Rod was rapidly establishing himself as one of the leading three-year-olds in the country. After winning the Gulfstream Park Derby, General a Rod finished second in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) and third in the Florida Derby (gr. I), which earned him a trip to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby (gr. I). Although General a Rod could only manage an eleventh-place finish in the Run for the Roses, he did come back to finish a strong fourth in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) despite a troubled trip, and might have finished third with better luck. All told, General a Rod has compiled a record of two wins, two seconds, and a third from eight starts, with earnings of $$407,200.
