1-5 favorite Cinco Charlie picked up the fifth stakes victory of his career on January 24th when he won the $100,000 Riley Allison Stakes at Sunland Park by 8 1/2 lengths.
Ridden to victory by Casey Lambert, Cinco Charlie got off to an excellent start and quickly seized command of the early lead, running the opening quarter in a quick :21.88 seconds to lead by a half-length over longshot Pasamonte. Cinco Charlie then extended his lead to a length through fractions of :45.62 and 1:11.30 before drawing clear in the homestretch to win in impressive fashion. The final time for one mile was 1:38.18.
Made Me Talk briefly looked like a challenger after rallying into contention on the final turn, but was unable to match stride with Cinco Charlie while edging Dirt Monster for second by 1 1/4 lengths. Misterbulltoyou and Pasamonte finished fourth and fifth, while In for the Money was pulled up on the backstretch and did not finish the race.
The winner, a son of Indian Charlie out of the Marquetry mare Ten Halos, is trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by William and Corinne Heiligbrodt.
