First-time starter Know More pulled off an upset last night in the $150,000 Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) for two-year-olds, rallying in the Del Mar homestretch to win by a half-length at odds of 8-1.
Ridden to victory by Garrett Gomez, Know More was content to settle off the pace while racing four-wide during the early stages of the race, roughly 3 1/2 lengths behind pace-setting Amarish. K Court and Heir Kitty were also close to the pace, followed by Heir of Storm, Know More, Moreno, Scherer Magic, and Miss Empire.
Through fractions of :22.83 and :45.81, Amarish continued to lead the way, but the filly Heir Kitty soon presented a challenge and surpassed him inside the eighth pole. She appeared to be on her way to victory, but Know More came charging hard in the final sixteenth to secure the victory, despite drifting somewhat in the homestretch.
Heir Kitty finished 1 1/4 lengths clear of Miss Empire, a fellow filly that rallied well to be third. Heir of Storm, Scherer Magic, Amarish, Moreno, and K Court completed the order of finish.
The winner is owned by J. Paul Reddam and trained by Doug O'Neill.
