Champion 2yo filly My Miss Aurelia, unraced since winning the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) last fall, made a successful return to the races this afternoon at Saratoga, rallying to win the $100,000 Mandys Gold Stakes by three lengths.
Ridden to victory by Julien Leparoux, My Miss Aurelia stumbled at the start and found herself in last place early on as Srumdiddlyumptious led the field of five through an opening quarter mile in :22.40 seconds. Xunlei was racing right behind her in second, followed closely by Well Kept. Delightful Quality and My Miss Aurelia were the trailers.
Following a half-mile in :45.71 seconds, Delightful Quality made a three-wide bid to challenge for the lead, overtaking Srumdiddlyumptious and briefly securing the lead. However, My Miss Aurelia was putting in a strong run on the far outside, striking the front at the eighth pole before drawing clear of her rival. Despite drifting in somewhat during the final furlong, she coasted home under a hand ride to win the race by three lengths. The final time for 6-1/2 furlongs was 1:15.90 seconds.
Delightful Quality finished second, 2 1/2 lengths clear of Well Kept. Srumdiddlyumptious and Xunlei completed the order of finish.
The winner is trained by Steve Asmussen and owned by Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton. As a two-year-old, My Miss Aurelia went undefeated in four starts, which included a victory in the Adirondack Stakes (gr. II) here at Saratoga. Today's victory brings her record to a perfect 5-for-5 with earnings of $1,440,000.
