Itsmyluckyday much the best in Gulfstream Park Derby

Itsmyluckyday rebounded sharply from a pair of disappointing recent efforts when he romped to a convincing victory in the $100,000 Gulfstream Park Derby on New Year's Day at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden to victory by Paco Lopez, Itsmyluckyday flashed speed from the start, settling just off of the lead in second as Undrafted led the way through quick fractions of :23 flat and :44.93. Sr. Quisqueyano was right behind them in third, while Almost English raced well behind the top trio in fourth. Star Contender and Joshua's Comprise were the early trailers.

Following three-quarters of a mile in 1:09.11, Itsmyluckyday moved up alongside Undrafted to challenge for the lead. Sr. Quisqueyano was also presenting a strong challenge, and those three were well clear of the rest.

As they entered the homestretch, Itsmyluckyday drifted out considerably, leaving plenty of room for Sr. Quisqueyano to shift to the inside. For a few brief moments, it appeared as though the latter was going challenge Itsmyluckyday for command of the race, but Itsmyluckyday quickly straightened out and left his rivals behind, powering to a 6 1/2 length triumph while stopping the clock for a mile in 1:34.39 seconds.

Sr. Quisqueyano finished second, five lengths clear of Undrafted, while Joshua's Comprise, Almost English, and Star Contender completed the order of finish. Purple Egg and Uptown Anthem scratched.

Itsmyluckyday is trained by Edward Plesa Jr. and owned by Trilogy Stable and Laurie Plesa. A son of Lawyer Ron out of the Viva La Slew, by Doneraile Court, Itsmyluckyday has now compiled a record of 4-1-1 from 8 starts, with earnings of $185,600.
