The magnificent Dawn Approach stamped himself as the early favorite for the 2013 English classics when he coasted to yet another impressive victory in the prestigious Dubai Dewhurst Stakes (Eng-I) on Saturday at Newmarket.
Ridden to victory by Kevin Manning, Dawn Approach showed speed from the start while tracking pacesetter Leitir Mor for the opening five furlongs. A quarter of a mile from the finish, Manning asked his mount for run, and while Dawn Approach did not immediately lengthen stride and take command, he did so brilliantly inside the final furlong. With a burst of speed he left Leitir Mor behind, coasting to an authoritative 2 3/4 length triumph while stopping the clock for seven furlongs in 1:24 flat over a course labeled good to soft.
Leitir Mor held second by three-quarters of a length over George Vancouver, while Ashdan, The Ferryman, and Funk Soul Brother completed the order of finish.
A son of New Approach out of the Phone Trick mare Hymn of the Dawn, Dawn Approach is trained by Jim Bolger and owned by Goldolphin Racing. He is now undefeated in six starts, which -- in addition to his Dewhurst win -- includes a victory in the Goffs Vincent O'Brien Stakes (Ire-I).
