Fourth time was the charm for the up-and-coming three-year-old Pimpernel, who drew off to win a six-furlong maiden special weight at Santa Anita on February 8th by nearly three lengths in the impressive time of 1:08.69 seconds.
With jockey Martin Garcia riding the colt for trainer Bob Baffert, Pimpernel sat second early on through fractions of :22.52 and :45.17 set by Act, then accelerated through a final quarter in an excellent :23.52 seconds to win by 2 3/4 lengths. A son of Elusive Quality out of the Dixieland Heat mare Xtra Heat, Pimpernel was bred by Woodford Thoroughbreds and is owned by Juddmonte Farms. He looks bound for stakes company next time out.
Finishing second in a promising performance was Little Curlin, a Jerry Hollendorfer-trainee that rallied well to finish 5 1/4 lengths clear of the rest of the field. With a strong pedigree for longer races, Little Curlin appears primed to break his maiden in the near future.
Act, Party Time, and Shackleford Banks completed the order of finish.
