Second-choice Rumor pulled off a mild upset in the $100,000 L.A. Woman Stakes on Sunday afternoon at Santa Anita, rallying to the lead at the top of the stretch and holding off a late run from Great Hot to win the 6-1/2 furlong sprint by a half-length.
Ridden to victory by Mike Smith, Rumor broke well from gate one and soon worked her way to the outside to settle in third place, 1 1/2 lengths behind pace-setting Lady of Fifty. Great Hot was on the far outside in third, while heavily favored Winding Way trailed the compact field.
Moving around the turn, Rumor moved up to challenge Lady of Fifty for the lead and soon claimed it, entering the homestretch narrowly in front. From the top of the stretch to the eighth pole she extended her lead to a length, but Great Hot was putting in a good rally on the outside, and appeared capable of winning the race. However, Rumor found something extra inside the final fifty yards, and held off Great Hot's late bid to win the race in 1:17.47 seconds.
Lady of Fifty finished another length back in third, with Winding Way coming home last, beaten 7 3/4 lengths in a disappointing performance.
The winner is trained by Richard Mandella and owned by Ramona Bass, Claiborne Farm, and Adele Dilschneider. She is a daughter of Indian Charlie out Mini Chat, by Deputy Minister.
