Justin Phillip showed a new dimension in the $250,000 Woody Stephens Stakes (gr. II) this afternoon at Belmont Park, going straight to the lead and turning back all challenges en route to a decisive victory in the seven furlong event.
Under Ramon Dominguez, Justin Phillip battled for the early lead with Derivitave and Travelin Man. Arch Traveler and J J's Lucky Train were biding their time far off the pace. The opening fractions were :22.23 and :44.45, after which Justin Phillip began to pour it on and draw away from his rivals. Arch Traveler and J J's Lucky Train made mild late bids, but neither threatened the impressive winner, who won by several lengths in the sharp time of 1:23 2/5.
J J's Lucky Train finished a head in front of Arch Traveler, with Travelin Man and Derivative completing the order of finish.
