SCOTUS WINS THE MATT WINN!

Sent off as one of the longshots at 8-1, Scotus proved himself to be a quality stakes horse when he mowed down Joe Vann in the stretch of the Matt Winn Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill Downs to win by about a length and a half.

Under Alan Garcia, the colt sat well off of the early pace set by the two favorites, Wilburn and Joe Vann. Those two opened up a large lead early on over the rest of the few while racing out in the middle of the track. Turning into the homestretch, the two colts appeared to be on their way to a 1-2 finish. However, Alan Garcia had Scotus in gear on the far outside and the colt responded gamely to draw clear in the final eighth of a mile.

Infrattini closed well to finish second, with Joe Vann and Wilburn completing the superfecta.
