Dreaming of Julia holds off My Happy Face in thrilling Frizette Stakes

Heavily favored Dreaming of Julia managed to hold off My Happy Face at the end of a race-long duel to win the one-mile, $400,000 Frizette Stakes (gr. I) on Saturday afternoon at Belmont Park by a head.

Ridden to victory by John Velazquez, Dreaming of Julia broke alertly and soon settled into second as My Happy Face led the way through moderate fractions of :23.22 and :46.19. Dreaming of Julia was about a length to a half-length behind, with a large gap of at least six or seven lengths back to Toasting, who was in turn well ahead of the trailing Nancy O.

My Happy Face and Dreaming of Julia continued their duel through three-quarters of a mile in 1:10.46, and the two fillies entered the homestretch well in front of Toasting and with nothing between them. Throughout the entire stretch run they battled, with Dreaming of Julia maintaining the slightest advantage down to the wire, which she reached in 1:37.10.

My Happy Face was game in defeat, finishing well clear of third-place finisher Toasting. Nancy O trailed the field.

The winner is owned by Stonestreet Stables and trained by Todd Pletcher. A daughter of A.P. Indy, she is now undefeated in three starts and will head to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) at Santa Anita on November 2nd as one of the favorites.
