Tapitsfly, the 5-2 second choice in a field of six, rallied past Daisy Devine deep in the Keeneland homestretch to win the $350,000 First Lady Stakes (gr. I) this afternoon by about a half-length.
Ridden to victory by Jose Lezcano, the usually front-running Tapitsfly was content to settle back into fourth place early on as Summer Soiree set a moderate pace of :24.00 and :47.26. Daisy Devine was tracking the pace in second, followed along the inside by Brilliant Future. Hungry Island and Snow Fall were the trailers.
Summer Soiree continued to lead through three-quarters in 1:11.40 seconds, but was soon surpassed by Daise Devine and Tapitsfly, with Daisy Devine drifting outward and taking Tapitsfly with her. But the latter filly proved extremely game in deep stretch, rallying past Daisy Devine to score a narrow victory while stopping the clock for a mile in 1:35.44 seconds.
Hungry Island made a late run to secure third, followed by Summer Soiree, Brilliant Future, and Snow Fall. The winner, a daughter of Tapit, is trained by Dale Romans.
