Two-time listed stakes winner Sum of the Parts added a graded stakes victory to his record on Friday afternoon when he rolled to an easy victory in the $175,000 Phoenix Stakes (gr. III) at Keeneland, securing himself a fees-paid berth to the Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) in the process.
Ridden to victory by Julien Leparoux, Sum of the Parts bounded out of the starting gate and quickly took command of the six-furlong race, leading the way by a length over Doctor Chit through fractions of :22.75 and :46.04. Will's Wildcat and Cajun Breeze were also close to the pace, followed then by Noble's Promise, Night Party, Laurie's Rocket, Aikenite, Hamiltonian, and Lonesome Street.
Turning for home, Leparoux asked Sum of the Parts for run, and the three-year-old colt responded with a burst of speed that put him four lengths in front passing the eighth pole. Noble's Promise and Laurie's Rocket made determined runs to round out the trifecta in that order, but Sum of the Parts held them both off safely by about 1 1/4 lengths. The final time was 1:09.88 seconds.
Aikenite ran well to finish fourth in his first start since the 2011 Breeders' Cup Sprint, while Doctor Chit, Will's Wildcat, Lonesome Street, Cajun Breeze, Hamiltonian, and Night Party completed the order of finish.
The winner is a son of Speightstown out of Enjoy the Moment, by Slew's Royalty. Trained by Tom Amoss and owned by William Lawrence and Klaravich Stables, Sum of the Parts' record now stands at 5-2-0 from 10 starts, with earnings of $501,463.
