Dakota Phone pulled off a shocking 37-1 upset in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, rallying furiously to nab Morning Line in the final strides.
Morning Line and Vineyard Haven set a blazing early pace, with the early fractions being :22 2/5, :44 4/5, and 1:09 2/5. Morning Line had a clear advantage in the homestretch and looked home free despite the pace he had set, but was just nosed out in the last jump by the winner.
Gayego turned in a mild rally to finish third, beaten about a length and a quarter. Cool Coal Man completed the superfecta, which paid out $36,883.80 on a $1 bet.
The final time was 1:35 1/5.
