2011 KENTUCKY DERBY STARTERS AUCTION PRICES

The following is a fascinating list of the top twenty Derby contenders by graded earnings and the prices for which they were sold at auctions in the past.

Animal Kingdom – $100,000
Archarcharch – $60,000
Brilliant Speed – Never sold at auction
Comma to the Top – $5,000, $22,000 (Sold twice)
Decisive Moment – $70,000 RNA
Derby Kitten – Never sold at auction
Dialed In – $475,000
Master of Hounds – Never sold at auction
Midnight Interlude – Never sold at auction
Mucho Macho Man – Never sold at auction
Nehro – $170,000
Pants On Fire – Never sold at auction
Santiva – Never sold at auction
Shackleford – $275,000 RNA
Soldat – $180,000
Stay Thirsty – $160,000, $500,000 (Sold twice)
Twice the Appeal – $4,000 RNA, $35,000 (Sold twice)
Twinspired – $55,000, $140,000 (Sold twice)
Uncle Mo – $160,000, $220,000 (Sold twice)
Watch Me Go – Never sold at auction

Eight of the twenty horses on this list were never sold at auctions. Another two didn’t meet their reserves.

The most expensive Derby start this year is Stay Thirsty, who sold for $500,000 as a juvenile. Dialed In was close behind, being sold for $475,000 as a yearling.

The most inexpensive starter is Comma to the Top, who sold for $5,000 as a weanling. $4,000 was bid on Twice the Appeal when he was a yearling, but it didn’t exceed his reserve.
