TURBO COMPRESSOR WINS THE UNITED NATIONS STAKES!

Turbo Compressor gave trainer Todd Pletcher a sweep of the two graded stakes races held at Monmouth Park this afternoon when he turned back a late run from Air Support to win the $500,000 United Nations Stakes (gr. I) in gate-to-wire fashion.

Under a flawless ride from jockey Joe Bravo, Turbo Compressor broke quickest of all in a field of seven and went straight to the lead in the eleven-furlong turf marathon, setting fractions of :25, :49 4/5, and 1:15 flat while leading by about two lengths. Longshot Freud's Honor was racing in second, followed on the outside by Eldaafer and on the inside by Al Khali. Air Support was next, while Brilliant Speed and Slim Shady were content to trail the field.

Rounding the far turn, Turbo Compressor began to increase his speed, getting his fourth quarter in :24 1/5 to complete the first mile in 1:39 1/5. He then threw in a brilliant fifth quarter 22 2/5 that brought him past the eighth pole in 2:01 3/5, and from there, the race was over. Air Support and Al Khali made mild bids to secure the second- and third-place positions, but Turbo Compressor's final eighth in a simply brilliant :11 1/5 allowed him to coast home unchallenged, stopping the clock in 2:12 4/5.

Freud's Honor, Slim Shadey, Brilliant Speed, and Eldaafer completed the order of finish.
