Here is yet another three-year-old who looks like he could be something ---- Congo.
A son of Johannesburg out of Plenty, the chestnut colt was the 9-5 favorite in the third race at Aqueduct today, a one-mile and seventy-yards allowance optional claiming race. Only four other horses were in the race and Congo was fully expected to win.
Trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by David Cohen, the colt settled back into fourth in the early going as Cat Sweep, the second choice, set the pace. He continued to race in fourth for much of the race as Cat Sweep set slow fractions of :24.88, :50.03 and 1:15.15 flat. As the field turned for home, Congo was trapped in a pocket with nowhere to run. There was only one option --- drop out of the pocket and circle the field.
It looked impossible. Yet once Congo got free he rallied furiously on the far outside to defeat Ruler On Ice in strong fashion. The final time was 1:43.02.
Any three-year-old trained by Todd Pletcher should be watched. And when a three-year-old trained by Todd Pletcher wins like Congo did today he should be considered one of the top prospects for the Triple Crown.
