In the sixth race at Gulfstream Park this afternoon, a one-mile turf allowance race for three-year-olds, Queen'splatekitten stamped himself as a potential Triple Crown contender when he rallied furiously to win the event by two lengths.
Sitting well off of a fairly slow pace set by The Best Glacier, Queen'splatekitten, under jockey John Velazquez, launched a very wide bid as the field entered the homestretch. It looked as though the 8-5 favorite had too much ground to make up, but then he simply exploded, rallying past horses with a speedy move rarely seen. I calculate that he must have closed his final eighth of a mile in ten and change! The final time was 1:36.73.
It was a remarkable performance, one worthy of great accolades. There is no doubt in my mind that this colt is something special.
