Fort Hughes, sent off as the 7-5, turned in an impressive front-running effort to win the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct by all of four lengths.
Ridden by Eddie Castro, Fort Gughes broke alertly and was sent straight to the lead, where he dueled with third choice Royal Currier through testing fractions. Second choice Rift was rating behind them in third.
Turning for home, Fort Gughes began to pull away from Royal Currier, passing the eighth pole in :56.37. He continued to draw away in the final sixteenth, stopping the clock in a very sharp 1:08.33. Royal Currier finished second, followed by Rift and Bravo Romeo. Bambi Bound and Running Tap trailed.
