In the 2010 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap (gr. I), Fluke took the lead in the stretch. He was caught in the shadow of the wire by the brilliant mare Proviso.
The 2011 running of the Frank E. Kilroe Mile looked like it would end with similar results. Once again, Fluke, at odds of 3-1, took the lead in the stretch. Then heavily favored Caracortado charged up on the outside.
But this time, Fluke dug in gamely. Caracortado inched closer with every stride, but Fluke proved undeniably courageous, holding on to win by a desperate nose.
Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, it was Fluke's second grade I win; Fluke having won the Citation Handicap (gr. I) in the fall of 2009.
The early pace was set by Acclamation and Liberian Freighter, who set a very quick pace. In the meantime, Fluke was sitting many lengths behind along the rail, with Caracortado next to last.
Turning for home, Acclamation gave way, leaving Liberian Freighter on the lead. But horses were charging up on all sides, and Liberian Freighter gave way shortly thereafter.
Caracortado was charging in the center of the course, and appeared to have the race won. But Fluke shot through along the rail and took the lead. Caracortado desperately tried to wear him down, but was unable to do so, falling just short. Jeranimo ran third, followed by Times Gone By.
It was without a doubt one of the most thrilling stretch runs I have ever witnessed.
