Premier Pegasus turned in a simply dominating performance in the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II) tonight at Santa Anita Park, drawing away powerfully in the stretch to win the race by about seven or eight lengths.
The early pace was set by Albergatti and Runflatout, both of whom were coming off of maiden victories. They ran the opening quarter mile in :21.75. Right behind them was Comma to the Top, and it was a long way back to the remainder of the field. Premier Pegasus, under Alonso Quinonez, was racing in midpack early.
Down the backstretch Comma to the Top made a bold run to take the lead from Runflatout. Albergatti was beginning to fade, and it appeared as though Comma to the Top was going to draw off and win. But Premier Pegasus was coming like a rocket on the outside. Entering the homestretch, Premier Pegasus powered away from Comma to the Top and extended his lead throughout the stretch, eventually hitting the wire in 1:41.23.
Finishing second was favored Jaycito, who rallied late but never threatened the winner. Bench Points finished third, with Comma to the Top fourth.
