GEMOLOGIST WINS THE WOOD MEMORIAL!

The undefeated Gemologist brought his record to a perfect 5-for-5 when he turned back a bid from Alpha to win the $1,000,000 Resorts World Casino New York City Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) by a half-length.
Ridden to victory by Javier Castellano, Gemologist got off to a very quick beginning and settled into the third position early on as The Lumber Guy set a quick pace of :23.04 and :47.57 while somewhat rank. My Adonis was racing in second, with Casual Trick fourth toward the rail. Alpha was next, followed by Tiger Walk, Teeth of the Dog, and Street Life.

Rounding the far turn, Gemologist and My Adonis made bold runs to challenge The Lumber Guy for the lead, with Gemologist moving much stronger than the latter. Alpha was also coming on strongly on the outside, and inside the eighth pole, Alpha appeared to be on his way to victory. However, Gemologist gamely turned back his rival to win in good fashion, stopping the clock for nine furlongs in 1:50.96.

Teeth of the Dog also rallied strongly to finish third, with Tiger Walk rounding out the superfecta. The winner is owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Todd Pletcher.
