Silver Max posted a mild upset in the first stakes race of the 2012 Keeneland spring meet, winning the $100,000 Transylvania Stakes (gr. III) in dominating fashion.
Ridden to victory by Robby Albarado, Silver Max got off to a very quick start and raced away to set the early pace while leading by two lengths. State of Play and Icon Ike were racing a joint second, followed by Wayward Sailor and Monastic. Travel Advisory was the early trailer.
Through fractions of :23.46 and :47.37, Silver Max extended his lead to four lengths while still going easily under Albarado. Rounding the far turn, Icon Ike made a bid for the lead, and Monastic also began to close ground, but Silver Max turned them back under urging to enter the homestretch with a commanding lead. From there, the race was over, as the colt drew off powerfully to win by about six lengths while stopping the clock for 1 1/16th miles in a quick 1:41.81.
Travel Advisory split horses and closed fast late to finish second, while State of Play held on to third. Monastic rounded out the superfecta.
The winner is trained by Dale Romans and owned by Mark Bacon and Dana Wells. A son of Badge of Silver out of the Kissin Kris mare Kissin Rene, Silver Max has now compiled a record of 5-2-0 from eight starts and appears to have found a home on turf, as all three of his victories have come over that surface.
