Eddie D Stakes Entries: Shrug, Comma to the Top headline field

The much-anticipated 2012 Santa Anita fall meet, which will host the 29th running of the Breeders' Cup later this year, begins on Friday with a nine-race card that includes the $100,000 Eddie D Stakes (gr. III). Named for the Hall of Fame jockey Eddie Delahoussaye, the "about" 6-1/2 furlong turf sprint was previously called the Morvich Stakes, but was renamed earlier this year.

A field of thirteen has been entered, led by Pirate's Bounty Stakes winner Comma to the Top. The speedy Peter Miller-trainee won the CashCall Futurity (gr. I) in 2010 and finished second in the following year's Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), but has since found a home as a sprinter, and a very good one at that. He figures to be among the favorites in this race, and a victory could put him on track for a start in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. III) in November. Mensa Heat and Boxeur des Rues, who finished third and fourth, respectively, in the Pirate's Bounty, are back again for the Eddie D.

Shrug should also be a major contender if he runs as well as he did last month in the Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar, where he rallied gamely to win the five-furlong turf sprint by a nose in :56 flat.

Unbridled's Note, a three-year-old that finished third in the King's Bishop Stakes (gr. I) last time out, will be making his turf debut for trainer Steve Asmussen.
