Executiveprivilege brought her undefeated record to a perfect 4-for-4 last night at Del Mar when she rallied on the far outside to win the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante (gr. I) by a nose.
Ridden to victory by Rafael Bejarano, Executiveprivilege was off to an excellent start, but was content to settle into fourth place early on as Beholder led the way through fractions of :22.44 and :45.34. Pat's Back and Mechaya were racing in second and third, with Renee's Titan, Heir Kitty, Wasted at Midnight, and Miss Empire at the rear of the pack.
Roudning the final turn, Beholder continued to lead the way, and entered the homestretch with a commanding lead. In the meantime, Executiveprivilege was attempting to rally on the far outside, but still had 2 1/2 lengths to make up inside the final furlong. It looked like a difficult task, and it became even more difficult when Executiveprivilege started drifting outward, but the filly somehow found enough to get up in the final strides and win the race by a desperate nose.
The final time for seven furlongs was 1:23.43 seconds. Beholder finished 4 1/4 lengths clear of third-place finisher Mechaya, who easily held off a late charge from Miss Empire to secure the show. Heir Kitty, Renee's Titan, Pat's Back, and Wasted at Midnight completed the order of finish.
The winner is trained by Bob Baffert and owned by Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman. A daughter of First Samurai out of Refugee, by Unaccounted For, Executiveprivilege earned $180,000 for her victory and has now earned a total of $390,000.
