Dixie Strike rallied furiously on the far outside to win the $150,000 Florida Oaks by a head this afternoon at Tampa Bay Downs.
Trained Mark Casse and ridden by Jose Lezcano, Dixie Strike settled off of the early pace in sixth while More Than Love set slow fractions of :25.66 and :50.79 while. In second was Customer Base, followed on the inside by Spielzeit and on the outside by Regalo Mia. Sisterhood, who stumbled badly at the break, was racing in fifth, followed by Dixie Strike, Northern Passion, and Shezmyten.
Rounding the far turn, More Than Love still led the way and was still going along easily, running three-quarters of a mile in an unchallenged 1:15.06. Then the pace began to pick up, as More Than Love attempted to kick away from the field. But Regalo Mia was beginning to run on the outside, while stablemates Dixie Strike and Northern Passion were moving in tandem on the far outside.
In the homestretch More Than Love continued to lead and was showing no signs of stopping, but Regalo Mia was coming hard on the inside while Dixie Strike was flying home on the far outside. At the finish, it was Dixie Strike by a head, with More Than Love another head in front of Regalo Mia. Northern Passion was beaten only a length while fourth, followed by Sisterhood, Customer Base, Spielzeit, and Shezmyten. The final time for a mile and a sixteenth was 1:43.30.
