A Three-Year-Old to Watch: Maan

Maan, sent off at 5-1, rallied along the rail to score a mild upset in the seventh race of the Gulfstream Park Thursday card, scoring by a neck in the 6-1/2 furlong allowance optional claiming event.

Ridden to victory by Julien Leparoux, Maan settled into the fifth position early on, about three lengths off of a quick early pace set by Seven Kind and Prayer Meeting. The duo ran the opening quarter mile in :22.39 over a sloppy track, with Dangerous Trick tracking them in third and Blings Express down in between horses fourth. Stat, the heavy favorite at 1-5, was back in sixth after breaking in the air, leading only Isutalkintome and Angelofdistinction.

Rounding the far turn Dangerous Trick moved up to engage the leaders for command and took a brief lead after a half-mile in :45.70. Then Blings Express moved up strongly to challenge Dangerous Trick for the lead, and garnered it in deep stretch. Stat was attempting to close in on the far outside, but was not moving strongly enough. Isutalkintome too was rallying in between horses, but time was running out. It appeared as though Blings Express was on his way to victory.

Then Maan suddenly burst through along the rail. Blings Express dug in gamely, but Maan stuck his head in front before gradually drawing away in the final yards to win the race by a neck in 1:17.84.

Isutalkintome came on very well to finish third, followed by Stat in fourth. Dangerous Trick, Prayer Meeting, Angelofdistinction, and Seven Kind completed the order of finish.

The winner is trained by Eddie Kenneally and owned by Joseph W. Sutton.
