A Three-Year-Old to Watch: Paynter

Paynter established himself as a highly promising three-year-old with a big future this afternoon at Santa Anita Park, coasting to a 4 1/4 length victory in a 5-1/2 furlong maiden special weight.

Ridden by Martin Garcia, the Bob Baffert-trainee settled into last place early on in the field of four horses, about three lengths off of the lead. Spring Warrior, also trained by Baffert, was setting in front early while setting blazing fractions of :21.52 and :44.50. Gophari was racing in second, followed by El Bronco.

Rounding the far turn, Paynter moved up strongly to challenge for the lead and gained it in early stretch. Under mild urging he powered away from his rivals, eventually hitting the wire decisively in front while under a long hold late. The final time was an excellent 1:02.98.

Gophari finished second, followed by El Bronco and Spring Warrior. Owned by Zayat Stables, Paynter is a son of Awesome Again out of the Cee's Tizzy mare Tizso.
