A Three-Year-Old to Watch: Windsurfer

Add one more name to the last of promising three-year-olds trained by Todd Pletcher. Windsurfer, owned by WinStar Farm and trained by Pletcher, broke his maiden with authority this afternoon at Gulfstream Park, drawing off to win a 1 1/16th miles maiden special weight on the dirt by a couple of lengths.

Ridden by John Velazquez -- who was winning his fourth race on the card -- Windsurfer broke well from gate nine, but was hung four-wide around the first turn. He soon settled into the fourth position, a length or two off of a moderate pace set by Pushingonastring, who recorded opening fractions of :23.86 and :48.20.

Rounding the final turn, Windsurfer moved up while four-wide to challenge for the lead. However, Pushingonastring had something left in the tank, and the two arrived at the top of the stretch right together and began to pull clear of the rest of the field. A brief stretch duel ensued, after which Windsurfer gained the upper hand and drew away to a convincing victory in 1:44.16.

Pushingonastring finished second, while Monarchic and Grouse rounded out the superfecta.
