Gemologist, the highly-regarded winner of the $150,000 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (gr. II) last winter, returned to the work tab for the first time since then on February 5th, breezing three-eighths of a mile in :39.88.
Trained by Todd Pletcher, the son of Tiznow out of the Mr. Prospector mare Crystal Shard had been given a winter break following his impressive Kentucky Jockey Club victory, in which he coasted home a winner by 1 3/4 lengths over the promising colt Ever So Lucky. The victory capped off a perfect 3-for-3 season, during which Gemologist also tallied victories in a maiden special weight at Turfway Park and an allowance optional claiming race at Churchill Downs.
Owned by WinStar Farm, the colt is scheduled to return to the races sometime in March, with the eventual goal being the $2,000,000 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on the first Saturday in May.
