A THREE-YEAR-OLD TO WATCH: MAJESTIC NUMBER

Todd Pletcher showed off yet another promising young horse this afternoon at Gulfstream Park, sending out Majestic Number to break his maiden going seven furlongs one race after Pletcher won an allowance race with the highly-regarded Spring Hill Farm.

Under John Velazquez, Majestic Number broke beautifully from gate nine and raced away to contend for the early lead with favored Rise Against. The pair ran the opening quarter mile of the $51,500 maiden special weight in :22.99 while leading by two lengths over Arkansas Joe. Saturnus was along the rail racing jointly in fourth with Fort Boonesborough, while Excess Liquidity, Port Conway, and Umstead trailed the field.

Following a half-mile in :46.68, the field moved into the far turn and Majestic Number put away Rise Against to take over the lead. Umstead had made a nice run to reach contention, but was beginning to flatten out. Arkansas Joe was still in contention to hit the board, but was not moving strongly enough to challenge for the win. However, Fort Boonesborough was rallying strongly on the far outside and moved up to challenge Majestic Number for the lead. The pair put on quite the show through the homestretch, but Majestic Number held on to the lead tenaciously to win by 1 1/2 lengths, stopping the clock in 1:25.09 over a track labeled sloppy.

Rise Against held on to finish a distant third, while Arkansas Joe rounded out the superfecta. Majestic Number, a son of Officer, is owned by Bortolazzo Stable.
