Paynter, who finished a close second to Union Rags in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I) one month ago, breezed six furlongs in a bullet 1:12 3/5 at Santa Anita Park as he trains toward a start in the $600,000 Jim Dandy Stakes (gr. II) on July 28th.
Owned by Zayat Stables and trained by Bob Baffert, the lightly-raced son of Awesome Again began his career on February 18th, winning a 5-1/2 furlong maiden special weight in impressive fashion. He then performed well without winning in both the grade I Santa Anita Derby (where he finished fourth) and the grade III The Cliff's Edge Derby Trial Stakes (second). A drop into allowance company yielded a strong victory, which was then followed up by a narrow defeat in the Belmont Stakes, where he just failed to steal the race in gate-to-wire fashion.
Today's workout was his second since the Belmont, the other being a :58 3/5 five-eighths breeze turned in on July 4th. Following the Jim Dandy, he may contest the $1,000,000 Travers Stakes (gr. I) on August 25th at Saratoga, although there are certainly many other options for the versatile colt.
