Union Rags injured, will miss remainder of season

Union Rags, winner of the $1,000,000 Belmont Stakes (gr. I) one month ago, has suffered a minor tendon injury and will miss the remainder of the 2012 racing season.

Owned by Phyllis Wyeth, the son of Dixie Union was among the leading juveniles in the country last year, winning the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) and Saratoga Special Stakes (gr. II) in addition to finishing a close second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I). He began 2012 with a dominating victory in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II), but tough trips kept him from performing to his best in the Florida Derby (gr. I) and Kentucky Derby (gr. I), where he finished third and seventh, respectively. He rebounded in his next start, closing gamely along the rail to secure a neck victory in the Belmont Stakes. His next start was scheduled to come in the prestigious Haskell Invitational (gr. I), but this injury will unfortunately cause those plans to be canceled.

Additional details are to be announced later this morning.
