J J's Lucky Train showed that he do just about anything today. Usually close to the front, he came from many lengths back today to win the seven furlong Bay Shore Stakes (gr. III) at Aqueduct by a neck.
Ridden by J. Ferrer, the son of Silver Train found himself on the outside while fifth in the early going, several lengths behind the early pace set by Smoke It Right. Vengeful Wildcat, the co-favorite, was sitting in second with Royal Currier on his outside up close early. Justin Philip was along the rail, with Buffum and Harlan's Hello trailing the field.
On the far turn, Royal Currier made a sweeping move to reach contention and appeared to be ready to blow past the leaders to take the lead. But Vengeful Wildcat was battling on, and took a clear lead into deep stretch.
J J's Lucky Train appeared beaten, sitting on the far outside while still a few lengths off the lead passing the eighth pole. But he rallied furiously to get up in the final few strides.
Vengeful Wildcat finished second, followed by Justin Philip. Royal Currier flattened out to finish in a dead-heat for fourth with Buffum. The final time was a quick 1:22.54.
