Favored Little Mike held off a late bid from Slew's Answer to win the $150,000 Florida Sunshine Millions Turf this afternoon at Gulfstream Park by 1 1/2 lengths.
Ridden to victory by Joe Bravo, Little Mike bounded away at the start to take a clear early advantage while setting fractions of :23.60 and :48.01. Slew's Answer was not too far behind, while Teaks North -- a two-time grade I winner and, to date, the only horse to have beaten Little Mike over the Gulfstream turf -- was in fourth while three-wide
Teaks North continued to just lope along on the front end, running three-quarters of a mile in 1:11.71 before turning for home with a short lead. Slew's Answer was charging hard on the outside and got as close as a length away at one point in the homestretch, but Little Mike showed great determination in turning back his rival to win the race in sharp fashion, stopping the clock for nine furlongs in a brilliant 1:45.94.
Slew's Answer ran huge to finish second, but just wasn't good enough to catch the winner. Bad Debt finished third, followed by Livingston Street to complete the superfecta.
