Reveron took the inaugural running of Gulfstream Park's $100,000 Gulfstream Park Derby in game fashion this afternoon, holding off the well-regarded Casual Trick by a half-length.
Ridden by Fernando Jara, Reveron broke well from gate two and settled into second along the rail as Nachas And Joy set the pace. Casual Trick was also close up early on. The fractions were reasonable for the mile and a sixteenth distances, with Nachas And Joy carving out fractions of :23.45 and :47.42.
Nachas And Joy began to tire on the far turn, allowing Reveron to take over the lead. But Casual Trick had been advancing in the three path and loomed a serious threat as the field entered the homestretch. The pair battled neck and neck for the entire length of the stretch, but while Casual Trick fought hard, Reveron proved simply too game and was turning Casual Trick back at the finish. It was a long way back to King Kid in third, followed by a tiring Nachas And Joy. The final time was 1:44.74.
The winner is owned by Stipa Racing Stable and trained by Agustin Bezara. A dark bay or brown colt by Songandaprayer out of Carolina Sunrise, Reveron could potentially return later this month for the grade III Holy Bull Stakes.
