Last year, I wrote up a popular post entitled "2011 Kentucky Derby Starters' Auction Prices", in which I compiled a list of all the Derby contenders with their sale prices listed alongside. In fact, it was such a popular post that I decided to do it again!
Here we go:
Alpha: Never sold
Bodemeister: $260,000
Creative Cause: $135,000
Daddy Long Legs: $100,000
Daddy Nose Best: $35,000
Done Talking: ($35,000 RNA)
Dullahan: $250,000
El Padrino: $210,000
Gemologist: $310,000
Hansen: Never sold
I'll Have Another: $11,000, $35,000 (Sold twice)
Liaison: $290,000
My Adonis: Never sold
Optimizer: Never sold
Prospective: $250,000
Rousing Sermon: Never sold
Sabercat: $120,000
Take Charge Indy: ($80,000 RNA)
Trinniberg: $1,500, $21,000 (Sold twice)
Union Rags: $145,000, $390,000 (Sold twice)
Went the Day Well: $15,000, $43,385 (Sold twice)
The most expensive Derby starter was Union Rags, who sold for $390,000 -- $80,000 more than the next most expensive Derby horse, Gemologist. The least expensive by a large margin was Trinniberg, who sold for just $1,500 as a yearling. What a bargain!
All told, seven colts (including the also-eligible My Adonis) were either never sold at auction, or failed to meet their reserves. Of the fouteen that did sell, only four sold for less than $100,000, the quartet being Daddy Nose Best, I'll Have Another, Trinniberg, and Went the Day Well. Seven colts sold for over $200,000.
It's hard to say which horse offered the best deal, but I would say that purchasing the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner I'll Have Another for a mere $35,000 was an excellent bargain. And of course, Trinniberg has more than paid for himself many times over.
The aggragate price of all the 2012 Derby starters that sold at public auction was $2,621,885. Considering that the 2000 Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus sold for $4 million, I would say this year's Derby contenders were a terrific set of bargains!
