Il Villano stormed past favored Innocent Man at the top of the Pimlico homestretch and drew away powerfully to win the $100,000 Chick Lang Stakes in terrific fashion.
Ridden to victory by Jose Flores, Il Villano got off to a good start from gate eight and settled right behind the early pace set by previously undefeated Innocent Man, who rattled off fractions of :23.24 and :46.27 under jockey Joel Rosario. Laurie's Rocket, the second choice in the field of seven, was also fairly close to the pace.
Rounding the turn, Il Villano moved up to challenge Innocent Man for the lead, and blew right past him as they entered the homestretch. From there, the race was over, as Il Villano coasted to an easy victory while stopping the clock for six furlongs in 1:10.40.
Laurie's Rocket out-finished Innocent Man for second, while Trippi's Secret, Scaramagna, He Can Run, and Mandorla completed the order of finish.
