Trainer Todd Pletcher swept the $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (gr. II) this afternoon at Pimlico race course, running 1-2 in the prestigious event with In Lingerie and Disposablepleasure.
With John Velazquez aboard, In Lingerie stumbled at the start before settling off the pace in the sixth position early on, a drastic change from her usual front-running style. Up front, the pace was being set by the even-money favorite Mamma Kimbo, an undefeated Bob Baffert trainee coming off of a victory in Oaklawn's Fantasy Stakes (gr. II). With Mike Smith aboard, Mamma Kimbo rattled off moderate fractions of :23.48 and :47.37 while leading by about a length over Glinda the Good and Welcome Guest. Plum and Disposablepleasure were the next pair, followed by In Lingerie, with Wildcat's Smile, Zucchini Flower and Oaks Lily content to trail early on.
As the field made their way around the final turn, Mamma Kimbo found another gear and briefly kicked away from her pursuers. However, she was soon confronted by Wildcat's Smile and In Lingerie, who made bold runs on the outside to challenge for the lead.
Entering the homestretch, Mamma Kimbo still led, by In Lingerie quickly powered by and opened up a clear lead. Disposablepleasure rallied strongly as well to finish second, but was never a threat to the winner, who coasted home by about a length and a half to win the nine-furlong event in 1:52.07.
Wildcat's Smile held third, while Mamma Kimbo tired to fourth.
