2012 Preakness Update #4

Another stakes, another impressive winner. Awesomemundo, from the barn of Bob Baffert, rallied furiously in the homestretch to take the $100,000 Allaire DuPont Distaff Stakes (gr. III) by about a head over Todd Pletcher's Love and Pride. The latter filly sat second early on through fractions of :23.29, :47.58, and 1:12.28, then kicked clear of the field turning for home. She appeared to be on her way to an easy victory, but Awesomemundo rallied fast on the far outside under Mike Smith to secure the victory. There was a rider's objection lodged by the jockey of Love and Pride against Awesomemundo for alleged interference in the stretch, but the replay showed both horses to be at fault and the stewards ruled no change.

Next up is the nine-furlong, $300,000 Dixie Stakes (gr. II) on the turf. A large and evenly-matched field has turned out, led by Hudson Steele, Casino Host, Smart Bid, and Air Support. It should be a terrific race to watch.
