2012 Kentucky Derby Update #6

Well! The first stakes race of the day has been run, and Great Attack looked simply phenomenal in the $125,000 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes (gr. III), charging furiously in the center of the racetrack to nab favored Bridgetown in the final strides, stopping the clock for five furlongs in :56.61. The victory gave jockey Joel Rosario, who will ride Creative Cause in the Derby, his first victory on the card.

Next up is the $400,000 Churchill Downs Stakes (gr. II), a prestigious seven-furlong sprint race on the main track for older horses. A highly talented field has been entered, including the reigning Eclipse champion sprinter Amazombie and the 2011 Preakness Stakes (gr. I) winner Shackleford. Calvin Borel will be aboard Will's Wildcat, while Corey Nakatani -- who has already won two races today -- will be aboard longshot Hamazing Destiny. Interestingly, this will be Borel's last mount prior to the Derby.

Track conditions have still not adjusted from "fast" and "good".
