Awesome Maria brought her winning streak to six consecutive races this afternoon when she romped to an easy victory in the $150,000 Rampart Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.
Facing only five rivals, Awesome Maria got off to an excellent start under John Velazquez and settled into the second position early on as Canadian Mistress set a moderate pace of :24.10 and :47.61. Beloveda was tucked in third toward the inside, followed on the outside by Lacie Slew and Go Unbridled. My Pal Chrisy was the early trailer.
The positions remained unchanged down the backstretch and into the far turn, but following three-quarters of a mile in a quick 1:10.52, Awesome Maria moved up to take over the lead from Canadian Mistress and entered the homestretch with a commanding lead. Beloveda made a run at her in deep stretch, but Awesome Maria was never really in danger of losing, coasting home two lengths in front while stopping the clock for nine furlongs in a quick 1:48.19.
Beloveda finished second, followed by Canadian Mistress and Lacie Slew. Awesome Maria is trained by Todd Pletcher and appears to be well on her way to having a terrific year.
