MONTEROSSO WINS THE DUBAI WORLD CUP!

Monterosso finished with a burst of speed in the Meydan homestretch to win the $10,000,000 Dubai World Cup by three lengths.

Ridden to victory by Mickael Barzolona, Monterosso settled not too off of the early pace set by Transcend, who ran the opening four hundred meters in :25.70 seconds and the first eight hundred in :49.90. So You Think, Royal Delta, and Capponi were also up close. Game On Dude broke poorly from gate fourteen and was far back early.

As the field made there way down the backstretch, Transcend continued to lead the way while under pressure. Game On Dude made a bold run on the backstretch to get up into contention, but was wide throughout and began to tire as the field rounded the far turn.

Entering the homestretch, Transcend gave way and allowed Capponi to take over the lead. But Monterosso was finishing strongly on the far outside and drew off with authority to win in decisive fashion. The final time for the 2,000 meter (about 1 1/14 miles) race was 2:02.67.

Capponi held second over the late-running Planteur, while So You Think finished fourth. Game On Dude tired in the homestretch, while Royal Delta encountered serious traffic as a result of Transcend tiring badly, and the filly was never in contention after that.

The winner is owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni.
