A Three-Year-Old to Watch: Heavy Breathing

Odds-on favorite Heavy Breathing, from the barn of Todd Pletcher, brought his career record to a perfect 2-for-2 with a dominating victory in a nine-furlong allowance optional claiming race over the main track this afternoon at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden to victory by Javier Castellano, Heavy Breathing got off to a good start and settled into the second position early on as longshot Sarava's Dancer set a moderate pace of :24.24 and :48.53. Bartolome was sitting in third, followed by Big Screen, Vee One Rotate, and Window Boy.

The positions remained unchanged around the far turn, but Heavy Breathing was moving strongly on the outside and moved up to take over the lead nearing the quarter pole. From there, he drew off with power to score a convincing 4 1/4 length victory, stopping the clock in 1:51.23.

Big Screen came on well to finish second, followed by Bartolome, Window Boy, Vee One Rotate, and Sarava's Dancer. The winner, a son of Giant's Causeway out of the Gone West mare Takesmybreathaway, is owned by Starlight Racing and gave the impression of being a very high quality colt indeed.
