On Fire Baby stamped herself as one of the clear favorites for the $1,000,000 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) with an authorative victory in Oaklawn Park's $125,000 Honeybee Stakes (gr. III) this afternoon.
Ridden to victory by Joe Johnson, On Fire Baby settled into the third position early on as Amie's Dini set a moderate pace of :23.68 and :47.38. In second was Rocket Twentyone, followed by Colonial Empress in fourth. Forgotten People, Inca Miss, Our Domain, and Silver Hustler trailed the field.
The positions remained relatively unchanged throughout, but as the field rounded the far turn On Fire Baby moved up to challenge Amie's Dini for the lead and those two entered the homestretch locked together with little between them. Throughout the stretch they dueled, with On Fire Baby gradually getting the better of her rival before pulling away late to win by two lengths.
The final time for the 1 1/16th miles distance was 1:43.64. Colonial Empress finished third, while Silver Hustler completed the superfecta. The winner is owned by Anite Cauley and trained by Gary Hartlage.
